The Vortex Series for New and Improvised music presents musicians
of diverse backgrounds, whose disciplines span classical, post modern, jazz
and electro acoustic. We are very proud team up this month with composer
Lou Cohen and his Open Sound series.
Opensound is a monthly concert series that explores improvised and
experimental music, bringing artists from disparate backgrounds
together for unique events in Somerville MA.

  Some Bios

  Ken Ueno (born 1970) is an American composer. He studied at the United
  States Military Academy. He graduated from Berklee College of Music
  with a B.M. in Film Scoring/Composition Summa Cum Laude, from Boston
  Unlversity with a M.M., fromYale School of Music with a M.M.A., and
  from Harvard University with a Ph.D. He has composed orchestral works,
  for jazz big band and woodwind quintet, and two dance pieces for the
  Boston Conservatory. He performed at the Flea, New York City. Ueno is a
  recipient of the 2010/2011 Berlin Prize Fellowship from the American
  Academy in Berlin. As a performer, Ueno is active as a throat-singing
  vocalist and performing with live electronics.

  Todd Brunel is an innovative, critically acclaimed clarinetist and
  saxophonist, who performs extensively as a crossover classical and jazz
  musician. As a jazz/improvisational performer and composer, he produces
  The Vortex Series for New and Improvised Music, a 2010-11 grant
  recipient from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Cambridge Arts
  Council and the Somerville Arts Council. The Vortex Series has also
  been chosen as the jazz "pick of the week" in the Boston Phoenix and
  the Boston Globe.
