Myrick, I’m unable to attend the meeting, but if anyone is planning on going my hope is they could convey the following to the police dept.:

When we moved in several years ago, police patrols (both bicycle and car) were obvious and frequent.  It let folks know that the park was a safe place and there was a real police presence.  Whether real or my perception, those patrols don’t seem nearly as frequent or obvious these days.  If it is possible to reinstate them I think that would help.

Thanks,

Matt Heller

§  Garfield Park Shooting - Meeting Today, 9.19 at Foreign Cinema Beginning at Noon [1 Update]

Myrick Tantiado <myr...@apr.com> Sep 19 07:50AM -0700

My apologies for the short notice as I just received this message in
regards to a recent fatal shooting at Garfield Park. Here's a news article
on the shooting: Man Shot, Killed on San Francisco Mission District Street<http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2012/09/17/man-shot-killed-on-san-francisco-mission-district-street/>

Please try to make this meeting today and forward the info to others in the
neighborhood.

repost from Emily Sharkey:

Hi Neighbors,

As many of you know, there was a fatal shooting at 4pm right outside
Garfield Park this past Sunday, about 8 feet from the playground fence. The
playground was full of children enjoying a sunny Sunday afternoon, which
was suddenly interrupted by gunfire. Parents grabbed their children and ran
(many into a public bathroom) for safety.
It could have happened to any of us. Easily a child could have been shot.

This violence is unacceptable and puts us all at great risk. If there is
any way you can make the meeting, it would be wonderful as the only way
that things will change is through placing pressure on the elected and
appointed officials.

There will be a meeting of the Mission Merchants tomorrow at noon at
Foreign Cinema. David Campos will be there and hopefully the Captain of
Mission station.

I'll hope to see some of you there. Please spread the word far and wide to
friends and colleagues-the more voices and bodies the better!!!

Take care and be safe.

I attended the meeting this afternoon.  Captain Robert Moser of the Mission Police Station was unable to attend as he had a standing meeting with a radio station...so a Lieutenant took his place and explained that the homicide was gang-related and the victim was a Norteno gang member.  He plans to have additional uniformed police officers patrolling the park for the next two weeks.  Also, the Lieutenant mentioned that the SFPD Academy will have a graduating class in two months as there apparently is a shortage of manpower.

There will be an additional community meeting on public safety at Good Samaritan Family Resource Center located at 1294 Potrero Avenue in the Community Room on Monday, 9.24 from 6:00-7:30pm.

Please try to stop by and invite as many other people in the area as possible..."the squeaky wheel gets the oil."
