In The Lovebirds, Leilani and Jibran's relationship hits quite a rough spot. Already struggling with their differences, life throws even more at the couple, when they suddenly become unintentionally involved in a murder mystery. With no other way out of this completely messed up situation, the two have to learn how to work together to prevent their lives from going downhill. Each step towards solving the mystery takes them on an increasingly insane rollercoaster filled with hilarious moments. Caught in this whirlwind, Leilani and Gibran are left to figure out how they and their relationship will make it out alive.
Due to their great chemistry on- and off-screen, Issa Rae, who portrays Leilani, and Kumail Nanjiani, who stepped into the role of Jibran, carry the entire movie with captivating ease. The characters' charm easily transpires straight through the screen, more often than not putting a smile on the viewers' faces. The Lovebirds is a great watch for a movie night, as it offers an intriguing storyline and captures the development of the main characters' relationships in an amusing way.
Role Models center on the chaotic lives of two friends, Danny and Wheeler, who are both in their mid-30s and caught in somewhat of a crisis. While the former feels as though he hasn't achieved anything meaningful yet, the latter only has his mind set on sex with strangers. Their days seem repetitive until they end up in a fight with a truck driver and are left with the choice of going to prison or doing community service. Danny and Wheeler have to take on the big-brother role of two young boys, Augie, a total geek when it comes to live-action role-playing, and Ronnie, the complete opposite of a well-behaved child. Unprepared and fairly overwhelmed, the two men make many mistakes, but maybe the boys will be able to teach them how to become real role models.
Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott have proven before that the genre of comedy comes more than naturally to them, but in this movie, they manage to deliver their humor particularly well. Role Models is filled with entertaining sarcasm and witty moments, which add to the authentic bond between the two men and their "younger brothers". The movie shines with touching conversations wrapped in hilarious jokes and manages to successfully portray the main characters' development without spoiling anything.
Despite its peculiar title, Hot Tub Time Machine is funnier than most people anticipate before watching. The story revolves around three friends, Adam, Nick, and Lou, who have been friends since they were teenagers. Although their lives had turned miserable for personal reasons, they never made an attempt to stay in touch. When an unforeseen circumstance brings them together, Adam, his nephew Jacob, Nick, and Lou meet at a winter resort they used to frequent. However, after taking a dip in the room's hot tub, everyone, including Jacob, is transported to 1986. With a fresh start in life, the trio is about to change their destiny, but Jacob is more concerned that these changes might result in him not being born.
Hot Tub Time Machine has no inherent traits that merit its extensive praise, but it simply exists to provide a fun experience for movie lovers. The film is jam-packed with '80s references, fashion, and music, which, despite being overshadowed by its crude humor, serves as a great nostalgic factor in taking us back to the good old days. If you want to see a more raunchy version of classics like Back To The Future, Hot Tub Time Machine is an excellent choice.
The Incredible Jessica James tells the story of a young woman who aspires to become a successful playwright in no other place than New York City one day. Considering that she recently split from her boyfriend, Jessica's life is somewhat uprooted, and a plan to move on needs to be made. Starting dating on Tinder, it is actually her intention to make her ex-boyfriend jealous, but instead, she meets Boone, who is going through a similar heartbreak. Joining each other in their emotional whirlwind, they learn how to move on and find themselves again.
Offering a lot of giggle-worthy moments, The Incredible Jessica James is a wonderful movie for anyone who is in need of a light-hearted watch. Jessica's story is refreshingly relatable and allows readers to fully dive into a more optimistic point of view instead of the common negative portrayal of a post-break-up world. This movie is filled with genuinely sweet moments, which highlight the main characters' growth as they try to figure out whether they can move on together.
In their recent outing, the Coen Brothers made one of their most inventive films that plays out as an anthology set against a Western theme. The film, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, features six short films all occurring in the landscape of post-civil war America and has an abundance of oddball characters that the Coens have come to be known for.
Over time, the Coen Brothers have become household names synonymous with great cinema. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs features most of the stylistic traits associated with the directors and provides a dark-humored take on a somewhat rigid and conventional genre. With an ensemble cast of Hollywood heavyweights featuring across the six different stories, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs has something for everything.
They Cloned Tyrone revolves around a trio of oddballs (a sex worker, a pimp, and a drifter) that stumble upon a nationwide conspiracy targeting Black communities across America by making them guinea pigs in evil experiments.
Aptly titled, Murder Mystery is a bona fide family entertainer that operates on the functioning of a mystery with the added inclusion of humor and suspense. In search of a spark, but met with a fire, the couple, Sandler and Aniston, put on display prime stupidity about how not to go about a case, eluding bouts of laugh-out-loud moments along with an overall pleasant viewing experience. For fans who have enjoyed the film, there's also a sequel that recently dropped on Netflix.
With a killer title like that, Netflix sure gathered all eyes on this stirring preteen comedy drama. However, blanketed within all the jokes is a perfect Gen Z gem that features cool music, full-hearted comedy, and wild dances. While the entire Sandler clan joins in on the fun, it's Sandy Sandler who shows massive promise, leaving the audience excited and willing to see more from her in the future.
Domhnall Gleeson (slowly becoming one of the most reliable and versatile actors out there) and Rachel McAdams star in this rom-com about a man who finds out he can time-travel and uses that power to try and get a girlfriend. A great concept sweetly executed by "Love, Actually" director Richard Curtis.
Jack Nicholson won his third Oscar for this, and Helen Hunt won an Oscar, too. Watch for their performances alone, although Greg Kinnear is also great as a gay artist whose assault essentially triggers the narrative of the movie.
