Hello!

I have a question for Gael.

I have just started building my InMoov. I am also a college student working on my degree in Computer Science. I am currently working on a short thesis for one of my classes and I have chosen to write about open source robotics, specifically I am arguing that open sourcing hardware and software will be the "great leap forward" in robotics.

My question: In what ways do you think open sourcing robotics hardware and software has changed or advanced the field of robotics and in what ways will it in the future?

Hello,
I think it is hard to for see the impact of open sourcing on robotics for the future. But as I see it, since I have started the InMoov prosthetic, by sharing the first 3D printable prosthetic OpenSource, it has had so much impact on the last 3 years about affordable prosthetics.
If the same wave impact is seen on robotics it will be tremendous.
Again, after I started InMoov robot, we have seen many other robotic 3D printed projects such as Jimmy(intel), Poppy, Maki, Plen2 and many more. These projects have all started with the same goals, sharing and being Open Source.
This year I have seen 3D printed hands on robots during the Darpa contest.

Open Source hardware is definitely changing many robotician minds and robotic engineers's approach, even if they don't fetch for specific parts or hardware, but it will influence their way of thinking. Tomorrow I'm giving a TED talk in one of the most prestigious engineering school in France (Ecole Polytechnique), why is that? Because they know OpenSourcing has to be taken in consideration for the next engineers.

Open sourcing will influence very deeply our whole economical system, if it isn't already happening.
