On-board computing and the Lenovo Touchpad 8?

Hello All,

Gael showed us InMoov's back in a video recently and this got me thinking about computing and what I'm going to need in terms of a dedicated platform.  Normally, I just dedicate a laptop to a specific animatronic project and I have a bunch of decent laptops.  But Gael mentions a "Lenovo Touchpad 8" in the BOM and it looks like the back pieces are designed to accept that.  The problem, though, is that here in the US, I can't find anything even remotely resembling a Lenovo Touchpad 8....at least by name.  I have a lot of Bluetooth and 5GHZ RF devices for Arduino and Raspberry Pi, but in practice, there is too much latency when trying to run off-board computing...especially when video is involved. So I'd like to find a reasonably priced on-board solution.  I have worked with, but do not own, one of the Celeron based Intel brick computers.  The idea with that would be make the CPU on-board buried inside the InMoov someplace with no access required, but keep a wireless touchpad monitor off-board.  No idea if that is practical, though.

In addition to Gael's set up, which I'm hoping he will elaborate on, does anyone else have an on-board computing setup running MRL and controlling a complete system?   If so, please share!  :-)

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,
As Robert mentions in his links, it is the Lenovo Thinkpad 8" touchscreen tablet.
Though it seems to be already difficult to purchase it, it can be replaced with the Miix of Lenovo. Make sure to take a model that runs on Windows system as stand alone computer.

I really should release the back cover parts before we can't even find a tablet that fits in my design...

Hi Gaël,

8" is compulsory ? 10" won't fit ?

Thanks,

Serge,

Awesome.  OK, I found dozens of these "refurbished" with windows 8 (which will upgrade to Windows 10 for free) on eBay, some for less than $150.  At that price, I will waste no time and go ahead and buy one.  I'm sure I will have other uses for it also.  Something else to tinker with.

Thanks,

Scott

While there are still some of these Lenovo machines left is there any chance that some of the back covers will be released?

Hello all,

Gael, my $148 Lenovo Thinkpad 8 arrived yesterday (Just the pad and power supply) and I was able to find the exact OTG cable on amazon.  The little 2-channel amplifier is cool and I can use those for other projects, so I got 5 of them for $12 on Aliexpress.  All good!   And crazy cheap.  So here are the questions:  1. I can't identify the magnetic Bluetooth keyboard you show with your Thinkad on the back video.  What brand is it?   Also, any particular brand of mini-hub and Powerbank?

I'm still assembling, wiring and testing everything using different components so it is going to be a while before I'm ready to use this stuff, but better to have it before you need it than the other way around.

Looking forward to the release of the back parts!

Thanks,

Scott

I was expecting to be able to use the case for travelling but unfortunately there is a serious issue with the size. Although the seller pretends to sale cases that fit 8" tablet it is truly impossible to fit the tablet.
So you are advised about the issue...
Beside that the keyboard works fine, with sometimes a loss of connection but it automatically reconnects anyway.

The PowerBank is a 10000mAh, from NeoXeo with two USB outputs.

Do anyone know a recent model that will fit the back ? as the back files are released now i would like to buy one but everything i found either doens't ship to germany or
is neither a Lenovo Thinkpad 8 or Lenovo Mixx2 8 Zoll...

What max size should it be to fit in ? At lenovo i can only get 10" or 12" tablets currently with Windows...
