VNC Server is a software that allows you to remotely access and control your computers from anywhere. To use VNC Server, you need to have a valid license from RealVNC, the company that develops and supports VNC. There are two ways to license VNC Server: using the cloud or using an offline license key.
In this article, we will focus on how to license VNC Server using an offline license key. This may be necessary if your VNC Server device does not have an Internet connection, for example. You will also need to apply an updated offline license key after your subscription renews.
You can find your offline license key on the Deployment page of your RealVNC account. If you use an offline license key, only direct connectivity is available. To use cloud connectivity, you need to use cloud licensing instead.
If you are running VNC 7.x, you can either download the license as a file or use the key directly at the command line or with policy. If you are running VNC 6.x, you need to use the offline license key shown in the table.
If you have desk-side access to VNC Server, you can apply your offline license key in the graphical License Wizard. To open the License Wizard, right-click the VNC Server tray icon and select Licensing:

Select the Register offline button at the bottom of the License Wizard and follow the instructions:

VNC Viewer only needs to be licensed when connecting to a VNC Server using a per user subscription. If you have desk-side access to VNC Viewer, you can apply your offline license key in the graphical License Wizard. To open the License Wizard, click File (VNC Viewer on Mac) and then click Apply offline license and follow the instructions:

If you do not have desk-side access to VNC Server or VNC Viewer, you can apply your offline license key at the command line. You need to run the appropriate command below, as an administrator.
For VNC Server 7.x:
Windows "C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC Server\vnclicense.exe" -add OFFLINELICENSEwhere OFFLINELICENSE is either the file path to your downloaded offline license file, or the offline license key itself.
For VNC Server 6.x:
Windows "C:\Program Files\RealVNC\VNC Server\vnclicense.exe" -add KEYwhere KEY must be replaced with your 25 character license key.
VNC Viewer 7.x does not support command line licensing at this time.
In this article, we have learned how to license VNC Server using an offline license key. This is useful if your VNC Server device does not have an Internet connection or if you prefer to not enable cloud connectivity.
