Ben 10: Alien Force is an American animated television series created by team Man of Action (a group consisting of Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and Steven T. Seagle), and produced by Cartoon Network Studios.[1] It takes place five years after Ben 10 and takes a darker turn than its predecessor.
The series premiered on Cartoon Network in the United States on April 18, 2008, and on Teletoon in Canada on September 6, 2008, and ended on March 26, 2010. The series was originally produced under the working title of Ben 10: Hero Generation. The series ran for a total of three seasons and forty-six episodes with its final episode being aired on March 26, 2010.
Set five years after the end of the original series, Ben Tennyson, now a teenager, once again dons the Omnitrix to protect the earth and other parts of the universe from villainous alien activity. The Omnitrix itself, a wristwatch-shaped device, allows Ben to transform into numerous alien forms, thereby inheriting the unique abilities of that alien race.
Ben 10: Alien Force is set five years after the original series. The second series is quite different from the first one: the storyline is notable for having matured the characters and taken a darker tone with more complex plots, more characters dying, and much less humor. The original logo has changed from the original series. This change received mixed reactions from the fans, and caused a division among them.[citation needed] Despite this, Ben 10: Alien Force's ratings were successful, allowing the production of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, taking place one year later.
When the Omnitrix was recalibrated it gained a more watch-style shape, a green wristband, and became smaller and sleeker with the face plate becoming black and green. The inside of the hourglass shape on the face now glows in different colors at special moments; these colors signify the state that the Omnitrix is in. The display mode of alien-shaped black silhouettes printed on the face has been replaced by a dark green 3D hologram hovering above the watch, giving a more detailed look of the selected alien.
The new Omnitrix also functions as a Plumber's badge which is used in the series as a communicator, a detector of other Plumber's badges, an alien-language translator, and as a key for accessing the Extranet, an intergalactic Internet.
In Ben 10, the reason Azmuth invented the Omnitrix was for all the beings of the universe to better understand each other. It was revealed in Ben 10: Alien Force that there was another reason for the creation of the Omnitrix. Azmuth tells Ben that the Omnitrix was invented to preserve the DNA of all living beings in the Milky Way Galaxy and restore them if they should ever become extinct.
Again directed by Alex Winter, the film's cast included Ryan Kelley as Ben, Nathan Keyes as Kevin, and Galadriel Stineman as Gwen. Lee Majors was offered to reprise his role as Grandpa Max, but he turned it down; the role was recast with Barry Corbin. The film also featured Alyssa Diaz as a new character named Elena, who was a childhood friend of Ben.[4] The aliens seen were Big Chill, Humongousaur, and a new alien named Nanomech. In the movie, Kevin's car was a green Dodge Challenger.
A total of three games based on Ben 10: Alien Force were produced: Ben 10 Alien Force: The Game, Ben 10 Alien Force: Vilgax Attacks, and Ben 10 Alien Force: The Rise of Hex. Characters from the Ben 10 series also made appearances in Cartoon Network's MMO, FusionFall.[7][8][9][10]
Lego Ben 10: Alien Force (stylized as LEGO Ben 10: Alien Force) was a Lego theme based on the animated television series Ben 10: Alien Force of the same name. It is licensed from Cartoon Network.[14] There were the total of six sets of buildable figures similar to Bionicle. The theme was first introduced in January 2010. The product line was discontinued by the end of 2010 and replaced with the Hero Factory in 2010.
Lego Ben 10: Alien Force was based on Ben 10: Alien Force animated television show. The product line focuses on Ben Tennyson's powerful alien forms with various abilities. Lego Ben 10: Alien Force aimed to recreate the main characters in Lego buildable figures, including Spidermonkey, Swampfire, Chromastone, Humungousaur, Jet Ray and Big Chill. Each of the sets included the Bionicle parts and allows children to build an action figure version of one of Ben's alien forms.[15][16][17]
Lego Ben 10: Alien Force was inspired by Ben 10: Alien Force TV series. The Lego construction toy range was based on the animated TV series and developed in collaboration with Cartoon Network Enterprises. The construction sets were designed to recreate the story and characters of the animated TV series in Lego form.[15]
Lego Ben 10: Alien Force theme was launched at the American International Toy Fair in 2010. The Lego Group had a partnership with Cartoon Network. As part of the marketing campaign, The Lego Group released six sets based on Ben 10: Alien Force. The six sets were Spidermonkey, Swampfire, Chromastone, Humungousaur, Jet Ray and Big Chill. The toy sets are marketed at children aged 5 to 12 years old.[18][19]
Spidermonkey (set number: 8409) was released on 1 January 2010 and based on the Ben 10: Alien Force character of Spidermonkey. The set consists of 21 pieces. The set measures over 8" (22 cm) tall.[22][23]
Big Chill (set number: 8519) was released on 1 January 2010 and based on the Ben 10: Alien Force character of Big Chill. The set consists of 20 pieces and measures over 8" (22 cm) tall.[22][28][29][30]
The storyline is notable for having matured the characters into teens and taking a darker tone, with increased narrative complexity and frequency of character deaths. Despite initially mixed reactions to the change from fans, Alien Force garnered positive reviews and successful ratings, leading to further continuation of the franchise and thus the production of a sequel series called Ben 10: Ultimate Alien.
Five years after the Original Series, 15-year-old Ben Tennyson has returned to a normal, everyday life. His adventures all done, Ben has taken off the Omnitrix and has grown from a young boy into a confident teenager; however, the mysterious disappearance of Grandpa Max makes Ben put the Omnitrix back on, as well as forcing him; his cousin Gwen; and his old enemy Kevin to search and locate Grandpa Max. At the same time, they must enlist the help of the Plumbers' kids (children or grandchildren of retired Plumbers which are commonly half human and half alien) and repel attacks from a new enemy, the Highbreed.
In the second season, Vilgax returns as the main antagonist, forcing Ben, Gwen, and Kevin to tackle bigger problems and find out more secrets about the Omnitrix. In the series finale, The Final Battle, Ben faces Vilgax again in their final battle, destroying the Omnitrix in the process. At the end, Ben is now armed with a new Omnitrix called the Ultimatrix.
The theme song shows a slideshow of Ben's first ten aliens in Alien Force. Initially in the first season, the tenth alien, Alien X, was kept as a mysterious silhouette. His full image was later shown after his debut. The melody is an orchestral remix of the two verses of the Original Series' theme song.
The small alien trying to steal BB-8 is Teedo, a Teedo. The Teedos are a small, reptilian species, potentially native to Jakku (Inner Rim, I13). Their origin is topic of debate between scholars, as some think the species have migrated from another world. The Teedos seen on Jakku cover themselves in protective wrappings and masks. They have green skins, and were known to have a form of telepathic connection between members of the species. Teedos made no distinctions between individuals and the species as a whole, and all Teedos were simply named Teedo.
The big reptilian guy is Grummgar, a Dowutin mercenary. The Dowutins are a species of huge beings, from the planet Dowut (Core Worlds). They evolved from omnivorous herd animals, that used chin tusks to dig up tubers and hibernating feeks in the frozen plains of Dowut. Dowutins have a long lifespan, at least several centuries long, and never really stop growing. Due to their size and strength, they often find employment as hired muscle. Three weevil-like creatures are the Dengue Sisters, who belong to the Culisetto, an insectoid species. They have purple and yellow exoskeletons, a long snout and compound eyes. Not much is known about the species, they were not included in Alien Archive failed to provide a homeworld. The Culisetto were actually subject of my first entry to this blog, read more about them here.
It's well-known by any Ben 10 fan by now that Alien Force is a controversial show. Even before it came up, the show already got criticisms from fans : they didn't like the new aliens' look, find Kevin switching sides ridiculous... I found that silly, and was ready to give the show a try. So I watched it anyway.
The thing is this show gets, at least for the two first season, a much Darker And Edgier tone. I'll admit, I can imagine some old fans miss the humor from the original show. Still, I can't help but believe it was an improvement : the plot got more coherent, Ben got a good Character Development and became a much more likable character than the brat he was in the original show, and the aliens, while being for some not as impressive as the old ones, were still quite good. I know the original series fans feel like the show went for teen drama and things like that, but I disagree; to me, this show was a nice add to the Ben 10 franchise.
Now, I'll still get to the bad points, cause yeah, there ARE. Sadly, the story has less villains, as the Hightbreeds, the angatonist of season 1 and 2, are present for most of the story arc. It intended to correct this in later episodes, but only a few of the new villains (mainly Albedo and Darkstar) were actually as likable and original as the one in the first Ben 10. Also, while Ben got a good developpement, he sadly ended up overshadowing his teammate, Gwen and Kevin, who despite both possessing large potentials got mostly reduced to minor allies that always got beat up by the ennemies. Finally, an even more annoying point, the third season, apparently due to fans' pressure, attempted to go more light-hearted in order to calm them. The result was.... well, disappointing mostly.
