Hey Everyone,

I'm hoping we can get some people together for a ride on a Saturday in the latter half of April and wanted to throw out some suggestions to see what you all think. These are just routes I've thought up (without having any personal experience with them on my bike and without much knowledge of exactly how cold some of the mountain routes may or may not be during the average April), but if any of you have some other ideas, please post them!

So far, I've brainstormed 7 possible rides. For the purposes of estimating distance and time, I used Redlands as the generic start point, hoping that it's a pretty central location relative to the distribution of our residences. The times listed are strictly "on the road," not taking into account that needed for food, gas, pics...or pondering the meaning of life from a scenic lookout, haha.

Anyway,

1) Big Bear 89 mi / 1h 57min: 330 to Fawnskin (north rim of the lake) to the 38 and down into Mentone.

2.a) Idyllwild 98 mi / 2h 4min: 79 south to Ramona Expwy east to 74 east to Idyllwild and 243 to Banning and back home. Going through Oak Glen at the end to get back towards Redlands might be a better finish than the fwy but the mileage and time will increase a little, of course.

2.b) Mountain Center 142 mi / 2h 37min: 79 south to Ramona Expwy east to 74 east to Mountain Center to Palm Springs and back on the 111 to the 10 west.

3) De Luz 103 mi *(one way) / 2h 32min: Oak Glen to 79 south, continue on Sanderson Rd to Domenigoni Pkwy east to State St south to Sage Rd south to 79 west. From here, can either just jump on the 15 north to Rancho California Rd west or go under the fwy to Old Town Front St north to hit Rancho California Rd west...small detail). Rancho California Rd heading west becomes De Luz Rd winding through some beautiful valley and dumping into Fallbrook. We'll hit E. Mission Rd where can turn west, then turn south onto S. Mission Rd to County Hwy S15 going east (aka E. Fallbrook St) then south on Stage Coach Ln. Turn east onto Reche Rd, south on Wilt Rd, finally to Pala Mesa Dr where we head east into Old Hwy 395. We can take this north (passing Canonita Rd) and then turn right to cross under the 15 fwy to continue north on Old Hwy 395, paralleling the fwy, where it will eventually become Rainbow Canyon Rd (aka Rainbow Valley Blvd) and run into Pechanga Pkwy. Here we turn left and run into the 79 once more.

I didn't plot a return route for this one yet, being unsure of where everyone would need to head home to (the fwy may be more convenient for some at this point?). Otherwise, I suppose it would be easy enough to simply return back through Sage if you're all up for it.

4) Borrego Springs / Julian 234 mi / 4h 48 min: 79 south, continue on Sanderson Rd to Domenigoni Pkwy east to State St south to Sage Rd south to 79 south to San Felipe Rd east to Montezuma Valley Rd east to Palm Canyon Rd east to Borrego Springs Rd east to Yaqui Pass Rd south onto the 78 west to complete the loop around through Julian and back onto the 79 north to get home the same way we rode in.

5) Arrowhead 93 mi / 2h 40min: 330 to 18 to 173 around Lake Arrowhead onto 189 through Crestline and up to Silverwood Lake State Rec Area where we can stop and come back down by looping through Cedar Pine Park and then take the 18 south through Arrowhead Springs where we'll run into the 210.

6) Ortega Highway

Once a general concesus seems to have developed, I'd be happy to start trying to figure out some food and gas points along the way of our ride. I can't wait to hear what you all think!

Tentatively schedule this for April 21st, if that works for everyone...I'm still waiting for my April work schedule to come out. I generally have every other Saturday off and the 21st falls on the "off" day in the pattern, but I don't want to make any promises just yet. I'll give you all more info as I have it.

Saturdays usually don't work for me, (Sundays are better), but with enough previous notice, I might be able to swing a Sat. All of those routes sound great. I've done the Ortega, Arrowhead, Big Bear, and Idyllwild rides several times and they would all be great. I could also suggest my favorite "backyard" ride, (I live in Upland), which is Baldy/Glendora Ridge Road/Azusa Canyon. If anyone loves twisties, that's a good one. I don't think we'll hit much in the way of snow and ice, unless we get some major moisture in the next couple of weeks. BTW, is anyone going on the Norton Club's Idyllwild ride this next weekend? I was planning on it.

I have to agree with Scott that Sunday's work better.  Plus the shop is closed on Sunday, so Art can join us. How about Sunday, April 22?  Also, that many choices makes me dizzy.  I don't even go down the cereal aisle anymore.  Borrego Springs would be nice in April.  We can leave the Mtns for summer.

Scott
The next Norton ride is the same day as our proposed J-Tree ride.  Choose Triumph!!!  Also, I am down for a GMR ride soon.  Not sure if this weekend is possible, but I will ping you next time I have a few spare hours.

Thanks for the input so far, guys - and the shop info, Bo. Sunday it is, then! I'm usually scheduled to work Sundays, but I think I should easily be able to preempt that this far in advance. Also, keep me posted if GMR comes up before April 22nd, I'd love to join you guys if I can.

I'm going to take a run up to Idyllwild tomorrow from Moreno Valley if anyone is interested in joining me, time is flexible.

My brother-in-law, father-in-law, and I were planning to go for a ride tomorrow, leaving Banning at noon. No location set in stone. Let me see if they want to go up the mountain. If so, we could meet you on Gilman Springs Rd where it crosses under the 79. Thanks for the heads up!

Lot of work put into this! I have done all these rides and all are
fun. The Borrego Springs ride we rode out Yaqui Pass and then up
Montezuma which I enjoy more but I know some people like downhill
curves better. Sunday, April 22 works for me.

Last week we tossed around the idea of going out through Sage to Temecula for lunch (at a place yet to be determined) and they'd like to head down that way still so I'll be sticking with them for the ride. You're definitely welcome to join us if you want. If so, looks like we'd be at the 79/Gilman Springs junction at 12:15. Otherwise, enjoy the ride up through Idyllwild and we'll catch you next time!

Hey everyone,

Thought it would be a good time to start nailing down some details for the upcoming ride.

So far it seems like Borrego Springs will be the destination. As for meeting areas, there is a Shell station next to a Jack in the Box on the west side of the road immediately south of the 10 fwy on the 79 that might be a good place to gas up and start. How does 9am or 10am sound for a time? If anyone is coming from the Riverside area and wants to meetup maybe somewhere on the west end of Hemet, that could easily be arranged as well.

As for food, there's a place in Borrego Springs called Carmelita's which I've seen some good reviews for online. I haven't tried to work out any stopping points during the ride yet, but am thinking maybe a 10 minute break or so roughly every hour would be good.

Let me know what you all think - the more input, the better (especially since I've never ridden south of Sage before). From here we can start to piece everything together a bit more.

Also, Theresa brought up the idea of uphill curves vs. downhill ones. I didn't think about this when I proposed the initial route, but have to say I think I like uphill ones better. Again, shoot me some opinions and we can go with the consensus. It's not a big deal to me either way really as long as I can just get out and ride.

When I've ridden that way we go out Warren to Domenigoni, less traffic
and lights, and we met at the shell station on Warren and Florida,
another option of a meeting place, because those of us from Moreno
Valley would probably go out Gilman Springs, not the 10. From that
shell station you have to exit right onto Florida to right on Acacia
to right on Sanderson to hit Domenigoni. I have also eaten at
Carlee's but it gets crowded by 12:00 or 12:30 and the service can be
slow when they are crowded - but the food is good.
Just in case anyone was planning to get gas in Warner Springs - the
gas station is closed for now, the local tribe owns the land and is
making some changes.

These are all just suggestions/ideas and any starting time is fine
with me.

Thanks for the advice, Theresa.

Sorry I haven't been on the forum lately - I was having trouble with my browser loading certain pages (thanks for your willingness to help, btw, Bo) - but I found a way around it now, so here are some updates along with a few requests for advice.

Meeting at the Shell at Warren/Florida at 10am for gas, sounds great. KSU @ 10:15.

It's about 75 miles or 2 hrs to Borrego Springs from our starting point; does anyone know of a good place for a pit stop and stretch along the way here?

Lunch at Carmelita's. (Hopefully they won't get bogged-down like Carlee's as Theresa mentioned?)

Gas up in Borrego Springs after lunch.

Ride ~30 miles out to Julian, with a stop at the Julian Pie Co. (2225 Main St) for a slightly postponed dessert after leaving Carmelita's. Aside from pies, they also have cider donuts - never had 'em, but they sound awesome and worth a try.

There will also be a farmer's market at Wynola Farms Marketplace (4470 Hwy 78) while we're there if anyone is interested in browsing for some edible souvenirs for maybe 20 minutes or so. I see this as more of an optional thing, since our day is going to relatively full as-is, but I'd be happy to oblige if anybody wants to take advantage of the opportunity and walk around for a bit to look at whatever.

The ride back to Hemet (assuming we all return through Sage) is roughly 70 miles or 1 hr 45 min. Does anyone know of a good break point along the way?

Also, do you all want to stop one last time at the same Shell station in Hemet for gas and goodbyes or just head our separate ways once back in the area?

Thanks to everyone who's thrown suggestions and advice my way. It's really appreciated. If you have any other ideas now, please add them! Whetever you can think of to make this ride even better would be great.

I plan to be at the coffee shop this Wednesday for one last discussion with whomever shows up to finalize everything before the 22nd, and I'll post any modifications made to the ride there on the forum that night, along with a link to a map of our route and stops.

See you on the road,
Chris

Sounds good, I will be there. I rode out that way two weekend's ago
and Warren road is getting rough - just in case some people don't like
a few bumps I wanted them to know. They could also ride out Sanderson
and still meet us at the gas station. I don't have any ideas of where
to stop along the way - I usually just ride straight though, but then
I don't have sport bike. Personally I would prefer to just head home
rather than stop in Hemet again, but that can be up to each person.
I'm fine riding home by myself. See everyone on Sunday - I hope it
has cooled down a bit by then and that we get a good turn out.

I'm happy riding straight through to Borrego and then back from Julian. Let's plan for that then. And if anyone would prefer to break anywhere in particular along the way, just say so before we leave Hemet.

Hey everyone,

Here's the link to the map of the route I plan on taking Sunday: http://g.co/maps/wm78b

The start point is the Shell station at the corner of Warren/Florida, although the map does not display an address. The meeting time is still 10am. I haven't planned any stops other than those lettered points on the map. The end point "D" is an Arco station that will be on our side of the road as we return. If anyone needs to gas up before leaving Hemet to head home, it may be a convenient location for you.

I'm excited to get out there with you all.

Art, thanks again for your advice.

Sounds like a great ride, unfortunately I will not be able to make
it. My husband rides sometimes with BMW of Riverside and they planned
(at the last minute!) almost the same ride on that day and he wants me
to ride with him. So hopefully I can catch you guys on another ride
and we may actually see you in Julian or Anza Borrego on Sunday. If
you see a bunch of GS's with one Bonnie in the group that's us.

Just so you know you can't turn left out of the gas station back onto
Warren, but you can just go right onto Florida, to slight right to
Acacia, to right on Sanderson to Domenigoni.

Have fun.

Theresa, you know they just want a Bonnie in the group to make them look good.  I might bring along a Beamer Rider on our ride just to even things up.  Hope we see you on the road.

Chris, All - Theresa is definately correct about the Shell station exit, but it's an easy adjustment.  I made the change on my own map (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1099574) on the Ride with GPS site.  You might like this site too.  It's pretty easy to plan routes, and you can download (or upload) GPS files.  Enjoy and see you on Sunday.

Hi Theresa and Bo,

Thanks for the heads up about the exit from the Shell station! Also, I will definitely use Ride with GPS in the future. It looks pretty awesome and a lot more functional than what I've used so far.

Hope everyone had a good ride. Me and Don decided to visit San Diego
on the way home!

Don - let me know if you made it home...

Cameron, made it home OK - stopped in Temecula for gas. Guess you know not to follow me now, I seem to lose track of exactly where I am and wander a bit.

Good ride. Heading home from Julian was beautiful. Hope everyone made it home safe. Lee + Chris, I just kept rolling on home. Hope you don't mind. Thanks for the ride idea Chris. See you all next time (at Marsh AFB?).

Great ride, Bob and I headed for Aguanga and we parted there, I went to Anza and then home via Idylwilde and Banning.

Here is a short vid from Hemet to Hwy 79, turn the sound down as I had the mic in the wrong place and picked up to much wind noise.
