Art asked us to talk about possible destinations for a ride on May 19 at the bike night last Wednesday. Bo suggested a ride through Joshua Tree National Park in an email.

Danny and I were the only attendees at the bike night, so no real discussion of a ride destination was held.

Since I have never ridden through Joshua Tree on the bike, it sounds like a good ride to me. What say you all?

Lee...contact Bo and ask him if he has a done it, wants to do it with the group this time, and has a good route idea. My suggestion is lets do it for sure. I would prefer go East on the 10 to Banning for breakfast and then on to the park and eventually come down through hwy 38. This will avoid most of the heat if it happens to be a hot one. But, I want to know what Bo thinks as I've only doen this ride once and it was the other direction.

OK. OK. OK. May 19 sounds good. Clearance has been granted.

Yes hot but Yes last chance before November. We can alway use Idyllwild or Big Bear as a back up if its TOO hot.

I had a route planned but it was top to bottom returning on Dillon Rd. I'll look at reversing that an returning via 38. I'd never thought of that so could be fun.

If it looks to be warm maybe we could start early -- just coffee? -- and aim for lunch at Crossroads Cafe in J-Tree?

I'm on the phone at the moment but will post some route ideas ASAP. just so everyone knows its $5 to get in the park and the speed limit is barely 2nd gear maybe 30-ish. The scenery is of course stunning and the overlook is pretty awesome.

Fingers crossed that the weather is like this past Sunday. Hope to see you all soon.

Regards,
Bo

Hello All-
I very rarely post anything to the Inland Rat group, (usually because I can very rarely go on the rides or go to bike night), but I saw the discussion, and thought I'd let you know about something. Two weeks ago I did a ride I wanted to do for a while. Headed east from my place in Upland, went out the 10 to the 62, up to Joshua Tree, then through the park, exiting the south/Cottonwood exit. (I then went south through Box Canyon, shot north through Mecca and Coachella and La Quinta, then hit the 74 Palms To Pines Highway, and went over the mountains to Idyllwild, and then finally dropped down to Hemet, then home.) My big surprise on the trip was about 20 miles south of the turnoff to go to Cottonwood, the paved road disappeared. They are re-paving and re-surfacing that southern road, so you have to negotiate about 10 miles of dirt, and, at times, gravely road. I was on my Thruxton, and did ok as long as I kept in low gear at higher rpm's. Tigers and Scramblers would probably do fine through there, Bonnies and Thruxtons will do ok as long as you are watchful and careful, but Speed Triples and Daytonas I don't think would be a great idea. Just my two cents worth. Have a great time whatever you guys decide to do. Thanks.

Hey Scott
Thanks for posting. Dirt and gravel are no fun when you are NOT expecting them AND you are a roadie. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I had a Tiger or a Scrambler. Mostly it's the clouds of dust that bug me. I'll call the park and see if anything has changed.

On a positive note, that sounds like a great route.

My original plan was enter the west entrance and depart South. If the road work is unfinished does anyone object to departing east (29P)?  I'll do some route planning this weekend so you can see what I am talking about.

Regards,
Bo

I have no idea what the + / -'s are for exiting east but I'm in regardless.

OK, so here's the forecast for Sunday: 93 in Redlands; 86 in J-Tree; 68 in Idyllwild; and 66 in Big Bear.

If 86 holds true, then J-Tree might still be OK, however the South entrance road is still under construction, so we would loop through the park and head back (191 mi), or take the scenic route to Big Bear and back on the 38 (238 mi).

I mentioned Idyllwild as an alternative since the OC RAT group has changed there ride date and are now headed through Idyllwild on Sunday.  They are regrouping in Banning at 10am at the Shell Station on Ramsey St.  If it looks too hot for J-Tree, then we could ride with those guys and turn back from Hemet.  Here's there OC route: http://goo.gl/maps/hvEMi

I'm happy to do either ride.

How about we meet at the Coffee Bean in Redlands at 8:30AM, and plan to leave for one route or the other by 9:30AM.

Lee, I'm pretty sure the OC guys would be happy to see you.  Are you happy with Idyllwild?  If so I'll let them know that we will met them in Banning.

Is it just the three of us?  Adrian?

Cheers

That's part of the reason I am saying lets meet the OC group. Been pretty quiet around here with the IE RAT group. We need some more interested riders it seems.

Yea...my parents showed up to see their grandson today from Oregon. I may not make much of the right but I'll be there for the morning part. It's a difficult time for me to take any time to myself so even a short ride with the guys is great!

Little guy is doing really good. He got his picture taken today by our photographer friend! I'll post some when I can.

I would love to ride with you guys again,  but I am 4 1/2 hours away, and I have to ride all of these wonderful  roads on the central coast by myself. Maybe someday you guys will do an over niter up to the central coast and I can ride with you again.

Adrian, & anyone else interested, it looks like we are going to meet at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Orange St. in Redlands at 8:30 a.m.  After a bite to eat we will head to Banning to meet up with the OC/LA Triumph group and head to Idylwood followed by Ortega Hwy, thru OC, and ending at the Olde Ship in Santa Ana.  See you in Red;amds/

Bo & Matt, after you guys turned around we passes Sage Road on our way to Temecula. Hope you found your way back! I had a good ride even with the shifter problems.  Thanks, Art, for tightening it back in place.

Yep, we made it back. I sort of thought we would hit Sage from the 79, but I was a bit disoriented. Should of checked the map. The turn off was only a few miles and that little road was pretty fun. I'd ride it again. I was nice to see everyone. Hope to ride with you all again soon.
