Dornfeld, named to the National Academy of Engineering this year for his contributions to sustainability in advanced manufacturing, sensors and precision material processing, has been studying what has become known as sustainable manufacturing since visiting a Daimler research lab in Germany in 1991.

There, he watched his colleagues investigate ways to reduce environmental impacts and improve manufacturing efficiency at Daimler factories by decreasing the use of energy and hazardous chemicals. Dornfeld returned to Berkeley to develop a systems approach to how manufacturers could use design to reduce the environmental impact of factory processes and of products themselves.

In 2009, Dornfeld launched a blog on this new field of green manufacturing, and this year he published a textbook, Green Manufacturing, largely co-written by current and former graduate students in mechanical engineering.

Diaz epitomizes the latest generation of engineering students excited to work on sustainability. Manufacturing is in her blood: While Diaz was growing up in Rancho Cucamonga east of Los Angeles, her father fixed cars, operated metal milling machines and helped keep factories running all over Southern California.

The experimental and hands-on nature of manufacturing drew her in, says Diaz of her undergraduate years at MIT. As a senior, she learned about sustainable manufacturing, including the importance of designing sustainable products.

She learned that much of the energy consumed by machine tools is not expended during the actual cutting process, but for peripheral equipment. Her insights helped Mori to redesign its machine tools, now programmed to turn off electronic components not in use while machines are at rest.

Autodesk is well known to engineers and designers for its software suite of 3D computer-aided design and manufacturing tools used by companies worldwide to visualize factory design and product manufacturing. Greening these Autodesk tools will change the way manufacturers build factories and make products across the planet.

Mitsui Seiki USA is the North American subsidiary of Mitsui Seiki Kogyo Co., Ltd., headquartered just outside of Tokyo, Japan. According to the company, the appointments position the organization for continued future growth and cement its foothold in precision machining industries such as aerospace and defense, energy and power generation, mold and die, medical and others requiring accurate machine tools and collaborative applications engineering services.

Malanche, COO, joined Mitsui Seiki in 1985 as a service and applications engineer trainee. His value and contributions to the company grew over decades, as he became an important liaison with customers, vendor partners and the factory in Japan. He has also been instrumental in product development and application in manufacturing facilities all over the world. Mr. Malanche is particularly well versed in the Mexican, Central America and South American markets.

Machining and measuring to exacting standards. Four basic considerations are: dimensions, or geometrical characteristics such as lengths, angles and diameters of which the sizes are numerically specified; limits, or the maximum and minimum sizes permissible for a specified dimension; tolerances, or the total permissible variations in size; and allowances, or the prescribed differences in dimensions between mating parts.

Kinetic is a world class supplier of industrial knives, part of the reason for this is we have a world class machine shop. We use the latest technology in metal cutting, grinding, heat treating, engineering, CAD/CAM software and employee training. Our fleet of Mattison Grinders is unparalleled to any other grinding shop in the world. In our CNC Milling and Lathe departments you will find machine tools from Mori Seiki, Toyoda, SNK and Makino. As you pass thru heat treating you see the latest in vacuum hardening and tempering equipment. Having this equipment means nothing without some of the best trained operators and engineers in the industry. Our equipment and knowledge adds up to the fact that Kinetic is a one stop shop for your grinding, machining and heat treating needs.

Our process is capable of generating machine programs for 3, 4, and 5-axis simultaneous or independent machining on multiple parts with real-time machine tool simulation. We accept a wide variety of file formats, and our CAD/CAM system is electronically interfaced to enable direct loading of programs both to and from our machines!

MSI also uses Epicor, a full-service ERP system designed specifically for manufacturers. Our ERP system provides precise control and documentation of all phases of the manufacturing process. Shop data collection is an integral part of Epicor, and this enables MSI to provide detailed, real-time answers regarding works-in-progress.

We offer contract engineering services to customers who want to perform in-house machining, but would like the additional expertise or resources that MSI can provide to develop the required processes on their own.

Programmable indexers and tilting rotary tables enable us to machine parts on up to five adjacent 90 surfaces and any compound angle. The breadth of our horizontal and vertical capabilities allow for a wider variety of complex parts, often in a single setup.

In addition to high-speed spindles and high-pressure coolant, many of our milling machines have two-pallet shuttle systems that allow us to machine parts on one pallet while loading parts on another pallet. This allows for faster processing times and shortened lead times.

Our turning department consists of state-of-the-art mill/turn centers, all with a wide range of machining options and quick change tooling for faster setups. Our turning centers allow simultaneous machining on two faces using dual-spindles and turrets, and we can easily handle off-center milling, cross-drilling, and backside machining.

Our complex 11-axis Swiss-style screw machining allows for the production of complex parts in one cycle, both ensuring accuracy in a part, and reducing production time and lead times. Our state-of-the-art equipment allows us to machine with close tolerances, meeting the exacting demands of any part, including those found in aerospace components and surgical instruments.

With live tooling, sub-spindles, high-pressure coolants and simultaneous machining operations, MSI produces complex machining in a single step. This is another way we build precision into every part while reducing both cycle time and overall lead time.

In order to ensure greater accuracy and consistency, we are equipped with an isolated grinding room floor that is temperature- and humidity-controlled with a coolant filtering system. MSI has several grinding machines, including both cylindrical and surface grinders.

Our EDM capabilities make it possible to cut small, oddly shaped angles, intricate contours, or delicate cavities in pre-hardened steels without the need for heat treatment to soften and re-harden them. EDM is also effective with metal or metal alloys such as titanium, hastelloy, kovar, inconel, and carbide. With EDM, we can make virtually any shape you want, including complex and curved shapes.

We know that our customers' needs often don't end with machining, which is why we offer a large selection of special processes. Our in-house capabilities increase speed-to-delivery, satisfying JIT and KANBAN demands.

MSI recently added four new state-of-the-art metal finishing lines for your aluminum and stainless steel parts. Our finishing lines include tanks for color dying, nickel acetate, dichromate, and hot water seals.

Today's customers demand the ability to issue one purchase order. In addition to providing you with high-quality components, we can supply you with complete subassemblies ready for your operation to place into final assembly.

Our full-scale assembly shop has the ability to provide extremely high-quality workmanship on a project of the most demanding standards. MSI can also assemble your components in a clean-room environment, which is ideal for medical equipment.

Needless to say, each part must be done right, and be fully documented that it was done right. A full set of precision instruments, routinely calibrated tools, and a highly trained quality assurance team are at Machine Specialties' disposal to ensure only the best parts reach your shipping docks.

As part of our expansion into our new facility, MSI has added the capabilities to produce larger parts which are especially important for landing gear, military parts, and parts used in oil, gas, and wind power generation.

Because not everyone is equipped to handle large parts, MSI has the relationships with partners that handle your large part needs. This makes MSI your one-stop shop for your most complicated large parts.

At Machine Specialties, our High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) coating technology distinguishes us in the machining industry. By integrating advanced HVOF capabilities with our machining expertise, we provide components with superior wear resistance, corrosion protection, and extended life.
