Inmy previous article, I explored the world of Feluda and Professor Shonku comic. The story does not end there. However, before delving further into that, let me share an intriguing incident from recent times.
I woke up in a daze and confused state of mind, my head still fuzzy from sleep. The remnants of sleep still clung to my thoughts as I surveyed my surroundings and saw that I was on a lonely beach or was it an island? Rising to my feet, I brushed the sand off my clothes.
And then as I saw the sandy expanse I noticed a partially submerged box appearing like an old trunk. I walked over and proceeded to uncover it from its sandy resting place. It undeniably resembled a treasure chest, complete with a secure lock.
The comics in the trunk were more than just stories to me. They were a portal to another world, a world where anything was possible. They were a way to escape from the everyday world and lose myself in a world of adventure.
Coming back to my previous article where I discussed the comics of Feluda and Professor Shonku. But besides that, there are two other famous Bengali fiction characters who have also been adapted into comics:
Recently, Onkarnath has also released a comic book about his twin children, Chiku-Munu. The comic is based on a daily gossip column that Bhattacharya wrote about his children on Facebook. It was so popular that it was eventually turned into a full-fledged comic book. The series is currently being serialized in the monthly issues of Kishore Bharati.
My love for mythology began with comics, specifically Amar Chitra Katha. I remember the Dasavatar digest that I had. I also had comics on Krishna, Durga, Tales of Shiva, Elephanta Caves, Ganesha, Ramayana, and individual comics on characters from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, such as Karna, Duryadhana, Tales of Arjun, Bhima, and Hanuman, Draupadi, Bhishma, Valmiki, Hanuman to the Rescue, Ravana, Sons of Rama, and a few more. I still have the Amar Chitra Katha version of the Gita.
Sujoy Bandyopadhyay, a Govt art college graduate, always wanted to tell his own story, revolving around the society he lives in. He wanted to create a character who was relatable to people from all walks of life, and who could also offer a unique perspective on the world.
With this, I come to the end of this article. However, the world of comic verse is vast and ever-expanding. There are countless stories, characters, and talented artists to explore. I hope this glimpse into the world of Bengali comics has piqued your interest and ignited your curiosity. Join me again in the near future as we continue our journey through the captivating realm of comic books, uncovering hidden gems and delving into the artistry that brings these stories to life. Until then, keep reading, keep dreaming, and stay tuned for more adventures in the world of comic verse.
The stories of Tenida are basically two types.[2] (i) Tenida narrates fabricated stories of his so-called heroism[3] (ii)Tenida & Pyala[4] or all the four are involved in hilarious adventures where the gang goes through interesting situations but solves the mystery at the end.[5] The short stories were extensively based in Calcutta and its suburbs, but the Charmurti traveled to Hajaribag,[6] Duars,[7] Darjeeling[8] where their pleasure trip turned into a series of mysterious incidents.
The suffix da used after his actual nickname Teni is short for dada(elder brother) which is used to initiate conversations with an elderly male stranger in colloquial Bengali. The shorthand, used after a person's name, is a mark of respect and acknowledgment of seniority. He is the leader of the gang. He is an indigent Bengali Brahmin. In the earlier novels, he is shown as a timid person.[9] However, in the later novels, he is portrayed as a brave person.[10] In the story entitled as "Kombol Niruddesh" (Bengali: কম্বল নরুদ্দশ ), it is mentioned that he knows Boxing and Judo.In the same story, Tenida knocked down a man of 112 kg weight with a single swirl.[11]
In March 1946 Narayan Gangopadhyay, shifted to a rented house at Patoldanga, Kolkata, where his Landlord was Mr. Probhat Mukherjee (Tenida).[12] Narayan Gangopadyay had a good relation with his landlord, to the extent where the two families were almost family friends.[13] When Bishu Mukherjee approached him for stories for 'Mouchak".[14] Tenida was created initially to mock his landlord in two stories "Matsya-Puran" & "Khattango O Pallanno".[15] Other two characters Kybla & Habul were added subsequently[16] and profile of Tenida also evolved.[17]
Kushal Mitra (Bengali: কুশল মত্র) also known as Kyabla (Bengali: ক্যবল), is supposedly the most intelligent, smart and brave among them. Clever and the top among his classmates, this handsome and dapper young man is the backbone of this group. Tenida always looks up to Kyabla for finding solutions to tricky situations. Kyabla has solved all the mysteries in all the adventures that they have been to. He is the integral part of Tenida's gang. The word Kyabla in Bengali means stupid. He is a Bengali Kayastha by caste.
Based on the eponymous novel, this story is about the adventures of Tenida and Co. when they go for an outing near Ramgarh and happens to encounter a gang involved in making counterfeit bank-notes. The film was directed by Umanath Bhattacharya. In the film Chinmoy Roy played the role of Tenida.
An animated series featuring Tenida started airing on Zee Bangla. Tenida was voiced by Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, who is famous for playing Feluda in the recent films. Kyabla was voiced by Debasish Ghosh, who also wrote the script. Habul was voiced by Tapan Chakroborty. He was also the drama director. Pyalaa was voiced by Abhijit Biswas. Although none of the character's description of hair colour is given in the books, but in the comics, they all have black hair. But in this series, Tenida has red hair, Pyalaa has brown hair, Habul has violet and Kyabla has black hair.
First 3 of them are also available as comic books viz. Jhau-bunglor Rahasyo and Tenida: Sindhughotok Aar Yeti from Ananda Publishers .This comics are illustrated by Arijit Dutta Chaudhuri.
The exhibition mounted by Comics Culture Collective demonstrated that creating an archive of Bengali comics is indeed possible. There is a wealth of cultural, literary, and social history, not to mention art and creativity, contained in these diverse works. For a language already resplendent with fine literatures, the addition of this genre can only enrich the repository further.
