There are 3 temples in and around the river within reach of one km each. Legend says that there were 3 demons - Thanjakan,Gajamugan,
Dhandakasuran who worshipped Lord shiva
and tried to get immortal boon .But Lord shiva assured them of not
having death from him. These 3 demons went on torturing the whole world.When
they were torturing Saint parasurar, Lord visnhu used Sakrayutha to
kill Thanjakan-hence the name thanjakanur later became Thanjavur. Gajamugan took the form of Elephant and Lord vishnu took
Narasimha avatar and killed him-hence the name Thanjai-Yaali. Lord
Vishnu took Varaha avatar to kill Dhandakasuran.-That's SriMushnam.
