I / We …………………. Of the State ……………., Tehsil ……………., District …………….,
farmers / workers / labourers / fish workers / small traders /
professionals etc. are opposed to the taking over of our land, houses,
and the sources of livelihood in the name of industrialisation under
SEZs to be developed by industrialists, builders and Multi National
Corporations. To impose a completely different agenda of destruction and
destitution is against the responsibilities of your party, of the UPA
government and a negation of the promises agreed to in the CMP by
various parties to the people.
We know and have also seen the plight of those displaced by various
developmental projects in the past in the country. We also believe that
it is not possible for the government to resettle farmers on the basis
of 'land for land' and alternative employment to each family for others.
Industrialists have always betrayed everyone even then the government
have always sided with them. Your own government has also been taking
decisions in the favour of companies, builder, and industrialists and
that is really a sad development.
SEZ Act now is an instrument in the hands of the industrialists, MNCs,
and builders to capture land, enjoy tax holidays, and completely bypass
the powers of the Local Self Government Structures (Gram Panchayats) and
establish a 'foreign territory' within the country in form of Special
Economic Zones. This Act is to destabilise the developmental processes,
is anti-national and is out to destroy the natural resources and
livelihood sources for millions. We completely reject such an enactment
and any effort to implement that.
This Act is very much in opposition to the provisions of the 73^rd and
74^th Amendements introduced by Late Rajiv Gandhi. We request you to
urgently interfere in the matter and to stop this unmindful destruction
of our lives, jobs, livelihood options and take over of the natural
resources by the industrialists, builders, MNCs and others under
infamous SEZ Act.
On 22^nd June 2007, Forty Six more new SEZs are going to be approved by
the 'Board of Approval' in total negligence of the environmental, social
and economic costs of these proposed SEZs. Neither have we been
consulted nor has our consistent opposition to the policy from across
the country been taken in to account. We won't let this happen at any
cost, and continue to struggle and oppose any such attempts at snatching
our livelihood resources.
We request you to kindly intervene in this matter urgently and also not
to bring a weak and much diluted Resettlement and Rehabilitation Policy
rather to bring out the National Policy on Development Planning and
Enactment proposed by the social movements and approved by National
Advisory Council and implement it in the right earnest through out the
country.
Let us not be forced to put our lives in danger and create a situation
like that of in Nandigram across the country.
Yours truly,
Sd /
