Hello ,
Condemn the police brutal killings & firings on fisher people of Gangavaram Port, Vishakhapatnam Andhra Pradesh.
YOUR IMMEIDITATE LETTER TO CHIEF MINISTER OF ANDHRA PRADESH IS GREATEST SUPPORT FOR THE VICTIMS
issue :
As part of the agreement with the private satellite port, the A. P. Govt. has sent the police on 25th March Saturday to Gangavaram port to remove the harboured boats and the habitatents of Gangavaram. Since people have been resisting to vacate the place until the proper compensation is paid for the displaced, they did not allow the police to pull out the boats. The district administration being witnessed to this situation has sent police battalion on Monday(27th March) to attack the fisher people of Gangavaram. Police has brutally attacked the fisher people and opened firing. As the result Mr. Chodipilli Nookaraju (37)the community leader has died on the spot and 50 others seriously injured. Cases are filed against 150 people enforcing 144 Section in Gangavaram.
Yesterday itself the issue was raised in assembly session by Telugudesam party(responsible for the permission when they were in power) where the govt. has promised to pay Rs three lakhs. as compensation for the deceased’s family!
Back Ground of the issue:
The AP government has sanctioned a private Satellite Port in a village called Dibbapalem, Visakhapatnam Dist with an investment of Rs.2,000 crores under the public -private partnership. The project was awarded during the Telugudesam Government. From the very beginning of the project, the fishing community has been resisting against the private port as it is going to displace 3,600 families of Gangavaram. Govt has become an agent for private port management to take up rehabilitation of the displaced people. As part of the rehabilitation package, they have promised to provide jobs, take up comprehensive rehabilitation and also promised to construct a separate jetty for the fisher people. As usual, govt did not stand by its promises, but forced people to vacate the place. Hence the problem.
Dispute between govt. and the fisher people, the victims of displacement:
While there are 3600 habitations in Gangavaram, the govt. has come out with inadequate rehabilitation for 1500 families only.
Secondly, when the community is asking the govt. to construct the jetty at Nalla Maramma Pattalu which is 1.5 kilometres distance to the habitations, the govt. is planning to construct jetty at yaarada which is at the distance of 7 kilometres in addition to cross a hillock to reach the village which is highly inconvenience to the community
Local action:
Many mass organisations and parties except congress has observed today total band in Visakhapatnam. APVVU along with other mass organisations in all the costal districts of AP is organising district level mass rallies and also signature campaign in solidarity with the fishing community of Gangavaram.
Local fishing community with the support of AP Sampradaya Mastya Karula Samakya is seeking the support of various organisations to express solidarity by writing letters directly to the Chief Minister of AP with the following demands.
All 3600 families of Gangavaram has to be compensated @ Rs 5,00,000/- for each the family.
The jetty should be constructed at Nalla Maramma Pattalu instead of Yaarada.
Constitute independent commission to probe in to the police atrocity in Gangavaram.
Stop construction of Gangavaram port until the compressive rehabilitation is completed.
Send the letters to chief minister by Fax and E-mails with the above demands of the community.
