Vimal Kaka kindled a fire that will continue to blaze in our hearts and homes
18th Aug, 2022, Khori Gaon: Our Vimal kaka is no more with us. He was the force behind our determination to fight for justice against the demolition of our homes. His demise has left a big void in our hearts and homes. But his words, methods and vision will continue with us. We, Khori saathis, are gradually finding the strength to continue the movement.
Kaka had been unwell for a few months due to Covid-related complications. When his health condition further deteriorated, we took him to Safdarjung hospital and based on their doctor’s advice, we shifted him to AIIMS the same evening. Kaka’s situation was already very critical, but he fought till 15th of August. He passed away due to complications related to the kidney, lungs, liver and reduced immunity.
From 10th Aug to 15th August, many of Vimal Kaka’s friends and family came and stood with us. We are very grateful to them. Their support was crucial for Vimal Bhai’s medical care and our mental strength. Kaka was our family during the last 13 months, and we were his. During these few days, we realised he had made families everywhere he went and worked. When we read the messages people have shared for him, we are overwhelmed with pride and gratitude. Vimal kaka was a towering personality, a social and environmental activist unparalleled.
Kaka came into our lives when all roads seemed to have ended after the 7th June 2021 court order. We were imprisoned within our settlement through the declaration of section 144 and threatened every day by the police for a month before the demolition started. Kaka came to meet us in the evenings after the police left to give us strength, educate us and organise. He was aware we did not have property papers, and many even did not have the correct government documents for rehabilitation. He taught us how to create a record of the people and what type of documents we had in such difficult times. It is because of this list that he forced us to put together quickly we are able to continue the fight for rehabilitation.
The public hearing organised by Kaka while the demolition was underway was another such step that has had a lasting impact. In the hearing, we got a chance to speak to academics, lawyers, journalists and other activists. We realised we were not alone. Some of the associations we made that day continues to date. He has been the link between the ground struggle and the legal and rehabilitation processes with the state. Even though he is not with us now, his writings and voice messages – Khori updates, will continue to give us strength.
Vimal Kaka was an institution in himself. However, during the last 13 months, there were many moments when he struggled to find solidarity for Khori Gaon’s movement. But during the time in the hospital, when others came to take care of us, we realised how his strategies and thinking had broken barriers and united us. We are confident these associations will continue.
Kaka has been celebrating all major events and festivals with us for the last 13 months, and we would have done something together this year too. But he had grander plans. He wanted all his many families to come together and celebrate his life.

विमल काका की जलाई अलख और उम्मीद, हमारे दिलों में, हमारे घरों में जलता रहेगा

हमारे विमल काका अब हमारे बीच नहीं रहे। वह हमारे घरों के विध्वंस के खिलाफ न्याय के लिए लड़ने के हमारे दृढ़ संकल्प के पीछे की ताकत थे। उनके निधन से हमारे दिलों और घरों में एक बड़ा खालीपन आ गया है। लेकिन उनकी बातें, तौर-तरीके और दूरदृष्टि हमारे साथ बनी रहेगी। हम, खोरी साथी, धीरे-धीरे आंदोलन को जारी रखने की ताकत पा रहे हैं।
विमल काका कोविड से संबंधित जटिलताओं के कारण कुछ महीनों से अस्वस्थ चल रहे थे। जब उनकी तबीयत और बिगड़ गई, तो हम उन्हें सफदरजंग अस्पताल ले गए और उनके डॉक्टर की सलाह के आधार पर उसी शाम को हमने उन्हें एम्स में स्थानांतरित कर दिया। काका की स्थिति पहले से ही बहुत गंभीर थी, लेकिन वह 15 अगस्त तक लड़े। उनका निधन किडनी, फेफड़े, लीवर से संबंधित जटिलताओं और कम प्रतिरक्षा के कारण हो गया।
10 अगस्त से 15 अगस्त तक विमल काका के कई दोस्त और परिवार आए और हमारे साथ खड़े रहे। हम उनके बहुत शुक्रगुजार हैं। विमल भाई की चिकित्सा देखभाल और हमारी मानसिक शक्ति के लिए उनका समर्थन महत्वपूर्ण था। पिछले 13 महीनों के दौरान काका हमारे परिवार का हिस्सा थे, और हम उनके थे। इन कुछ दिनों के दौरान, हमने महसूस किया कि उन्होंने जहाँ भी जाकर काम किया, वहाँ उन्होंने अपना परिवार बना लिया। जब हम उन संदेशों को पढ़ते हैं जो लोगों ने उनके लिए साझा किए हैं, तो हम गर्व और कृतज्ञता से अभिभूत हो जाते हैं। विमल काका एक महान व्यक्तित्व, एक सामाजिक और पर्यावरण कार्यकर्ता थे, जो अद्वितीय हैं।
काका हमारे जीवन में तब आये जब 7 जून 2021 कोर्ट के आदेश के बाद सभी रास्ते खत्म हो गए। हमें धारा 144 की घोषणा के माध्यम से अपनी बस्ती में कैद कर लिया गया और विध्वंस शुरू होने से पहले एक महीने तक पुलिस द्वारा हर दिन धमकाया गया। हमें शक्ति देने, हमें शिक्षित करने और संगठित करने के लिए पुलिस के जाने के बाद शाम को काका हमसे मिलने आए। उन्हें पता था कि हमारे पास संपत्ति के कागजात नहीं हैं, और कई के पास पुनर्वास के लिए सही सरकारी दस्तावेज भी नहीं थे। उन्होंने हमें सिखाया कि ऐसे कठिन समय में लोगों का रिकॉर्ड कैसे बनाया जाता है और हमारे पास किस तरह के दस्तावेज होते हैं। यह इस सूची के कारण है कि उन्होंने हमें जल्दी से एक साथ रखने के लिए मजबूर किया, हम पुनर्वास के लिए लड़ाई जारी रखने में सक्षम हैं।
विमल काका द्वारा आयोजित जनसुनवाई, जब विध्वंस चल रहा था, एक और ऐसा कदम था जिसका स्थायी प्रभाव पड़ा है। सुनवाई में हमें शिक्षाविदों, वकीलों, पत्रकारों और अन्य कार्यकर्ताओं से बात करने का मौका मिला। हमने महसूस किया कि हम अकेले नहीं हैं। उस दिन हमारे द्वारा बनाए गए कुछ जुड़ाव आज भी जारी हैं। वह जमीनी संघर्ष और राज्य के साथ कानूनी और पुनर्वास प्रक्रियाओं के बीच की कड़ी रहे हैं। भले ही वह अभी हमारे बीच नहीं हैं, लेकिन उनकी लेखनी और आवाज संदेश - खोरी अपडेट, हमें ताकत देते रहेंगे।
विमल काका अपने आप में एक संस्था थे। हालांकि, पिछले 13 महीनों के दौरान, ऐसे कई क्षण आए जब उन्होंने खोरी गांव के आंदोलन के लिए एकजुटता खोजने के लिए संघर्ष किया। लेकिन अस्पताल में रहने के दौरान, जब दूसरे साथी देखभाल करने आए, तो हमने महसूस किया कि कैसे उनकी रणनीतियों और सोच ने बाधाओं को तोड़ दिया और हमें एकजुट किया। हमें विश्वास है कि ये जुड़ाव जारी रहेगा।
विमल काका पिछले 13 महीनों से हमारे साथ सभी प्रमुख आयोजनों और त्योहारों को मना रहे है, और इस साल भी हमने साथ में कुछ किया होता। लेकिन उनके पास बड़ी योजना थीं। वह चाहते थे कि उनके सभी परिवार एक साथ आएं और उनके जीवन का उत्सव मनाएं।
विमल काका के सपनों को मंजिल तक पहुचाएंगे
