Cordially Invites  you for a  Consultation of Urban Poor of Mumbai,  On

T – WHOSE DEVELOPMENT ?

2nd June, 11am to 6 pm, Azad Maidain, Mumbai

Dear  Friends

Since last few years tall buildings and glittering lights have come to be synonymous with development of urban areas. And for this development slum dwellers to hawkers, pavement dwellers to construction workers, domestic workers to project affected are being sacrificed. Mumbai, the financial capital of this country is to house 60 % of its population in slums and thus negate their right to affordable and humane housing. With each passing day, the situation is worsening rather than improving; with the nexus of politicians-builders-corporates being at the forefront in taking decisions that are discouraging at the rights front, be it privatization of health services or water services or education.

All this is not passing without protest or resistance, those having belief in the values of equity and social justice have stood time and again against the misplaced policies and distorted priorities of our governments. In Mumbai, particularly when in 2004-05 more than 75,000 houses were demolished and lakhs of people rendered homeless and an attempt made to encroach over the 'freed' lands. In resistance emerged a movement, under the leadership of local women and youth, which challenged this corrupt nexus and made them acknowledge their right to housing. When these promises were not fulfilled, under the leader ship of women 78 acres of land at Ambujwadi & Mandala was captured and distributed amongst evicted families.

Taking the struggle ahead, engaged at policy level interventions by drafting & proposing pro-people policies. Also the nexus of politicians-builders-corporates has been exposed time and again be it slum rehabilitation or other projects.

To take the struggle ahead, a large convention of thousands of representative members of Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan is being held on 2nd June at Azad Maidain.
