Dear reader,
B R Ambedkar's concluding speech on the floor of the Constituent Assembly, on November 26th, 1949 is one of the most important ones in modern Indian history. It is a speech that must be compulsory reading for anyone interested in India's politics and public policy, which is why we publish a lengthy excerpt as the highlight of this month's issue. Do read it, contemplate on it and share it widely.
The second highlight is a conversation on the media and India-China relations. To what extent does media coverage influence public perception and policy towards the giant neighbour across the Himalayas?
There's more: on Asian security, Sri Lanka's political trajectory and global taxes; on the need to expunge socialism from the Constitution; on why economic liberalisation is necessary to check inflation; and a review of a book on the mysterious Sarasvati.
A couple of other things: First, we have a new section, a monthly brief on economics, called Pareto. Because we ran out of space in the print edition, you'll find it in our web edition, along with the regular Filter & Alif sections this month. Second, you'll notice that we've adopted the new rupee symbol -- you'll find it on pages 27 & 28.
