Read an article by Michael Meyler, author of "A Dictionary of Sri
Lankan English", about the current debate on what should be adopted as
the standard of English in Sri Lanka today:
Sri Lankan English: The state of the debate

the-debate/)

Interesting article. Thanks for posting the link, Sujeewa.

I'm quite sure that many of you saw this mail, clicked opened the link and seeing the lengthy article closed it. It happens to each one of us, especially since long articles are too daunting.

But there's a cure for this problem and I used that to read the above article. It's the RSVP Reader, which is actually an add-on for Firefox.

When you install this a bar appears below the standard toolbar in Firefox. You have to select the text you need to read and click the Play button. The selected text will be flashed chunk by chunk in the box in the toolbar. You can adjust the speed, number of words displayed, font size, etc. Just give it a try. You can download it at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2149

When you slowly get used to it you will notice your reading speed go higher and enable you to choose higher speeds. In fact, it can be used as a tool to improve the reading speed. When you get used to read text by chunks, the speed is automatically increased.

Unfortunately such an add-on is not yet available for Google Chrome.

Sorry if the mail was too lengthy. Thanks!

Several more articles have since appeared in various media, which
carry forward the debate. Read popular writer Malinda Seneviratne's
views on 'Sri Lankan English: another snooty English speakers'
project?
and Michael Meyler's 'A Snooty English Speaker’s reply
(http://www.groundviews.org/2010/06/03/a-snooty-english-speaker’s-
reply/)'.
I have made some comments myself on this latter article, as I did on
Meyler's earlier piece that I mentioned last time.

Two other interesting articles on the subject by Malinda Seneviratne
were published in last Sunday's newspapers:
'Snooty prescriptions for the yakkhos compromises yak-emancipation
(http://www.nation.lk/2010/06/06/newsfe9.htm)'
'On the ‘Snooty’ and ‘Yak’ in language and politics'
(This one that was in the Lakbima News is not accessible online due to
some reason, but Malinda will send you a copy if you email him at
'mali...@gmail.com'. It explains more clearly the possible elements
at play.)
