- Va. city installs water-level alarms after water main break
A water main break in Hampton Roads, Va., that caused a massive traffic jam in early July had passed an inspection in 2006. The water main released more than 1 million gallons of water, and the flood went undetected for hours by the Virginia Department of Transportation. VDOT officials said the agency would install water-level alarms in the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk)

- LaHood visits University of Maine for new bridge technology
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood visited the University of Maine's Advanced Engineered Wood Composite Center. LaHood viewed demonstrations of the "bridge-in-a-backpack" technology, which features lightweight carbon-fiber tubes. Researchers at the composite center estimate the technology's carbon footprint is 33% less than concrete bridges and 25% less than steel bridges. Bangor Daily News (Maine) (free registration)

- Geofoam blocks create core for road projects
Several Canadian highway projects are using geofoam blocks to mitigate soil shifting and decompression. For one bridge project, for example, the blocks were used to create a stable core for bridge approaches. Underground utilities have also used geofoam to keep traditional fill from settling and breaking utility lines. Daily Commercial News

- New Hampshire homeowners welcome geothermal heating
New Hampshire homeowners are embracing geothermal heating around the Lakes Region. DRAGIN Geothermal Well Drilling has installed geothermal heating in six new or retrofitted homes in the area. "Geothermal energy is available to every homeowner in New Hampshire," said David Wunsch, New Hampshire's state geologist. Wunsch noted that only 4 geothermal wells had been drilled in 2003 but last year 150 were drilled. The Citizen (Laconia, N.H.)

- Prosecutors expand concrete probe
Prosecutors in Manhattan have expanded their investigation of the concrete testing industry to include a company that supplies concrete to large public-works projects. Earlier this month, they executed a search warrant at the company, Casa Redimix Concrete, and attempted to ban it from supplying concrete for a major bridge replacement project. The company won a temporary restraining order that will allow it to continue work on the project. The owner of Casa has denied any wrongdoing. The New York Times (free registration)

- Hamas repairs Gaza roads with smuggled materials
With organized reconstruction of Gaza on hold indefinitely, the Islamic group Hamas has started repairing roads. The group is using cement and tar smuggled through tunnels under the Egyptian border. Last week, workers finished a road that collapsed last year. International officials say the road repairs are just a small part of the massive infrastructure repairs needed in Gaza. - New York scenic byway struggles with modern traffic
The Taconic State Parkway is one of New York's most scenic byways, but also last month was the site of Westchester's deadliest accident in 75 years. The road was designed as a recreational parkway in the 1920s but now faces the modern reality of commuter traffic. The winding lanes do not have overhead street lights, and some intersections still have stop signs rather than overpasses or stoplights. The New York Times

Kathy J. Caldwell, P.E., M.ASCE., an active member of ASCE since 1984, and most recently a member of the Board of Direction and the Executive Committee, has been chosen by the Society's membership as the President-elect for 2010. Caldwell will take office at the Society's Annual Conference in Kansas City, Mo., this October. As President-elect, she will support incoming President Blaine D. Leonard, P.E., F.ASCE, and prepare to assume the ASCE presidency in 2011. A structural engineer by training, the Gainesville, Fla., resident is president of Caldwell Cook & Associates, and is an adjunct professor at the University of Florida. In an election that saw the number of members' votes more than triple over last year, positions for At-Large Director, Technical Region Director, and Region Directors and Governors also were filled.
