ILRI vacancy: consultancy opportunity – international staffing consultant (open until filled)

Due to an increase in new research projects, ILRI has a large number of new international staff vacancies and has an immediate vacancy for a professional HR consultant to support the recruitment of new staff.

Duration: This consultancy assignment is for an initial period of 6 to 9 months. The consultant must already be based in Nairobi and have the right to work in Kenya. Work hours can negotiated if flexibility is required.

Key activities include:

  • Manage the recruitment, relocation and induction of international staff at the main campuses in Nairobi, Kenya and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and in locations throughout Southern Africa, West Africa, South Asia and South East Asia.
  • Support the development of policies that anticipate and respond to ILRI’s changing needs and geographical expansion as the organization moves into new research areas and new locations. This includes development of new arrangements to attract needed skills on short-term and part time basis, including visiting scientists, joint appointees, consultants, interns and volunteers.
  • Develop online advertising that will attract high calibre people for executive and professional research and business support positions.
  • Develop the induction program and pre-joining materials for international staff
  • Support the implementation of the recruitment module of a new Management Information System (MIS) that will encompass Research Management, Finance, HR, Supply Chain and bring all business processes under one system.

To be considered, candidates should have

  • Masters Degree in Business Administration, Human Resource Management, Organizational Development preferred or Bachelor’s degree and considerable relevant work experience.
  • Five years relevant work experience as an international HR staff/consultant working in comparable organizations operating in multi-cultural settings in developing countries
  • Experience of working internationally outside home country with first-hand knowledge of the issues affecting expatriate recruitment and retention.
  • Track record in attracting and securing high calibre international candidates through targeted advertising and campaigns and exploiting people and virtual networks, with skills to target advertisements to attract suitably qualified women and developing country citizens
  • Experience in HR systems development including e-recruitment and job evaluation tools.
  • In depth knowledge of infrastructure and facilities available in Nairobi including schools, housing, transport, shopping and leisure and be able to explain the benefits of living and working in Kenya. Knowledge of infrastructure and facilities in other locations where ILRI operates (Mozambique, Botswana, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Senegal, India, Thailand and Philippines) would be an added advantage.

Capacity building is an important facet of ILRI’s work. It enables ILRI to extend it’s research outputs and evidence-based knowledge to diverse stakeholders by building their capacities and ultimately contributing towards development. ILRI works with a large number of partners in building capacities. This is increasingly important with the new CGIAR Research Programs (CRP) where capacity development is viewed as a critical impact pathway.

ILRI seeks to recruit a dynamic and competent Head for its Capacity Development initiatives. The Head of capacity Development will help steer ILRI’s ongoing capacity development programs and will also help imbed capacity development in the CRPs, ILRI research themes and contribute towards ILRI’s institutional strategy development. The ongoing capacity development programs include, graduate fellowship programs; comprising of over 50 PhD and MSc students working at ILRI; working with different ILRI projects to imbed capacity strengthening and outreach components to them.

Key responsibilities

Scientific and Administrative

  • ILRI has a well-established graduate fellowship program, encompassing a large number of PhD and MSc students, interns, student associates working with different ILRI projects/programs. The head of CD is the overall in-charge of administrating this program. The head often plays a mentoring role for students coming from different parts of the world.
  • Develop and manage value addition activities for graduate fellows, such as short trainings on scientific communication, data management etc.
  • Involvement in implementation of CGIAR’s CRPs (CGIAR research programs) and incorporating capacity development as an important impact pathway. This will include working with different project leaders within ILRI and across other CGIAR canters to imbed capacity strengthening components.
  • Work in association with different ILRI programs for planning, implementing and monitoring capacity development aspects, contributing towards ILRI’s Strategy and that of the CGIAR Strategy and Results Framework.
  • Managing two CD units based in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Nairobi (Kenya), lead and develop staff of the unit.

  Institutional Role

  • ILRI views capacity strengthening as an important cross cutting issue for it’s different program themes and also between different CGIAR canters and CRPs. The head of CD will play an important partnership/networking role in assuring synergies between various research components through CD efforts.
  • Engage with key stakeholders at national, regional and international level to represent ILRI and articulate the capacity development rationale.

Resource mobilisation

  • Conceptualizing and contributing to various project proposals and maintaining good donor relationships for availing various fellowships and other funding opportunities.

  Eligibility

  • Preferably a PhD in agriculture sciences, extension, capacity development area.
  • Proven experience in program management, capacity development, leading teams
  • Networking skills and proven ability to work with a large number of partners/stakeholders;
  • Good administrative, communication and public relation skills
  • Experience working with multinational, multidisciplinary teams.

Post location: The position is based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Duration: This position is on a three year term appointment with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and continued funding.

Position level: The position is Scientist/Research Level 3.

The BecA-ILRI Hub seeks to recruit a Crop Molecular Breeder whose focus will be the development and/or validation and application of marker-assisted germplasm enhancement with a focus on major constraints of importance in African agriculture.

The Africa-based, globally networked International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) helps reduce poverty, hunger and environmental degradation by enhancing animal agriculture in developing countries. ILRI positions its work at the dynamic interface of poverty alleviation and sustainable livestock livelihoods. Our staff works in partnerships and alliances with hundreds of organisations in developed and developing countries, including some of the finest universities and research institutions in the world. ILRI also manages Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA)-ILRI Hub, a new centre for excellence in modern plant and animal biology in Africa. It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region. The BecA-ILRI Hub facilitates, hosts and conducts research in crop, microbe and livestock areas where new developments in science offer promise to address previously intractable problems constraining Africa’s development. Capacity building is a major goal of all activities. The scope covers agriculture and food security and their intersections with human health and nutrition, and the sustainable use of Africa’s natural resources. The BecA-ILRI Hub seeks to recruit a Crop Molecular Breeder whose focus will be the development and/or validation and application of marker-assisted germplasm enhancement with a focus on major constraints of importance in African agriculture. This includes genetic mapping, marker validation, MAS implementation using high-throughput genotyping systems plus training and technical backstopping of NARS partners in the region. This is an international appointment reporting to the BecA-ILRI Hub Director.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications will include:

  • Ph.D. degree in plant genetics, molecular biology and/or plant breeding
  • Familiarity with large-scale germplasm collections and field breeding programs and a strong background in quantitative genetics
  • Experience in high throughput genotyping system
  • Knowledge of SSR, SNP and gene-based marker development, validation and application
  • Application of MAS in plant breeding
  • Interest in international agricultural research and development
  • Ability to work well as part of multidisciplinary teams
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English language

Experience in any of the following areas will be considered an asset:

  • Knowledge of component trait analysis
  • Molecular breeding simulation and decision support tools
  • Double haploid and other rapid crop improvement technologies
  • Applying biotechnologies in developing countries
  • Quantitative phenotyping of a range of agronomic traits
  • Biometric and bioinformatics analyses

ILRI seeks to recruit a Senior Social Scientist and Team Leader to play a key role within the Markets, Gender and Livelihoods Research Theme in leading ILRI’s evolving and expanding portfolio of research addressing Poverty, Gender, Impact and Innovation throughout the institute.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and manage an international team of social scientists and economists working across a range of countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia that addresses;
  • Livelihood outcomes of innovation in livestock systems among producers, other value chain actors and their communities;
  • Gender implications of livestock development and strategies to achieve equitable development using livestock and improve livelihoods of women and their families;
  • Poverty analysis and impact assessment;
  • Innovation systems analysis to understand and design strategies for improving and accelerating uptake of livestock knowledge and technologies for improved livelihoods;
  • Lead ILRI’s strategy for research on livelihoods, gender and innovation, and support development of evidence for actionable interventions to stimulate innovation and improve livestock-related livelihoods;
  • Directly conduct scientific research in any one or more of the above areas;
  • Build collaboration with relevant institutions and organizations internationally and nationally to conduct research and to advance project goals and outcomes;
  • Support development projects led by NGOs and other development partners to ensure use of best practice in gender and innovation, and to generate objective evidence from piloting those interventions;
  • Support ILRI in mainstreaming gender, good impact assessment methods, monitoring and evaluation practices and innovation approaches across its projects and programs;
  • Develop proposals to raise resources to support new research addressing the team’s target outcomes.

Requirements

  • A passion for the generation of scientific knowledge that advances pro-poor development;
  • A Ph.D. in Social Science (Rural Sociology, Agricultural Economics, Social Anthropology, etc) or related field with application to agriculture or rural development, and a minimum of 7 years of experience post-PhD;
  • A proven research record extending to prioritization of research, study design, quantitative and qualitative analytic methods and peer-reviewed outputs;
  • Experience with sustainable livelihood approaches, gender analysis, impact analysis, innovation systems, and participatory methods in research; experience in application of quantitative methods would be a strong advantage;
  • Familiarity with aspects of livestock systems, production, and/or marketing systems in developing countries;
  • Experience in team leadership, planning, mentoring and managing performance of researchers of various levels, and of managing financial resources;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage multiple partnerships, and to develop successful funding proposals
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken (proficiency in French is strong advantage);
  • Willingness to travel frequently, often to rural areas in developing countries.

  • Lead and manage the collection and harmonization of livestock statistics, and survey data;

  • Contribute to the development of a farming systems classification scheme;
  • Develop technology and management scenarios and parameter sets for improving crop and livestock modeling, regional feed balances and others.

Requirements

  • PHD in Agronomy or livestock science;
