General: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is an autonomous, nonprofit making, international scientific organization operating under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). More specifically its mission is:

To encourage, support and undertake activities to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat systems in the interest of the resource poor in developing countries.

The position: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is recruiting a Research Assistant IV based in Addis Ababa, who will be a member of CIMMYT team.

MAIN DUTIES (Terms of Reference)

  • Contributes to the implementation of on-going research projects in Eastern and Southern Africa, particularly in relation to Conservation Agriculture for Smallholder Farmers in Eastern and Southern Africa (CASFESA) and other projects.
  • Contributes in designing and implementing field surveys and other socio-economic research activities.
  • Contributes in designing, implementing, monitoring and supervising Conservation Agriculture demonstration works in project sites.
  • Compiles, analyzes and rigorously document primary and secondary socioeconomic data sets.
  • Contributes in developing research reports, journal articles and policy briefs.
  • Guides, supports and monitors the regional NARES partners in planning and execution of research activities.
  • Pro-actively contributes, develops his/her skills and takes increasing responsibilities in all of the above.
  • Other reasonable duties that may be assigned by your supervisor.

Minimum Requirement:

Education: MSc. Degree from a recognized University in Agricultural Economics or any other related field in Applied Economics.

Experience: At least two years of demonstrated experience in:

  • Designing and implementing surveys in rural settings (preferably household and market surveys; and
  • Management and analysis of large socioeconomic datasets using standard statistical and econometric software (preferably SPSS and/or STATA)

Training: Agricultural economics; agricultural development economics; development economics; resource economics; econometrics; research methods; policy analysis.

Skills: 

  • Good econometric skills are essential; combination of good analytical, writing and field work skills; scientific rigor, initiative, ability to work independently.
  • Excellent command of English language (oral & written)
  • Knowledge of computer skill (MS Office, SPSS, STATA).
  • Driving license is an advantage.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa

Grade: Level 2D.

Minimum Gross Salary: Birr 13,388.

Terms of appointment:  This position is remunerated on local terms. Initial appointment is (fixed term) for two (2) years subject to a six (6) months’ probation period with possibility of renewal appointment, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. ILRI vacancy: consultancy opportunity – international staffing consultant (open until filled)

Due to an increase in new research projects, ILRI has a large number of new international staff vacancies and has an immediate vacancy for a professional HR consultant to support the recruitment of new staff.

Duration: This consultancy assignment is for an initial period of 6 to 9 months. The consultant must already be based in Nairobi and have the right to work in Kenya. Work hours can negotiated if flexibility is required.

Key activities include:

  • Manage the recruitment, relocation and induction of international staff at the main campuses in Nairobi, Kenya and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and in locations throughout Southern Africa, West Africa, South Asia and South East Asia.
  • Support the development of policies that anticipate and respond to ILRI’s changing needs and geographical expansion as the organization moves into new research areas and new locations. This includes development of new arrangements to attract needed skills on short-term and part time basis, including visiting scientists, joint appointees, consultants, interns and volunteers.
  • Develop online advertising that will attract high calibre people for executive and professional research and business support positions.
  • Develop the induction program and pre-joining materials for international staff
  • Support the implementation of the recruitment module of a new Management Information System (MIS) that will encompass Research Management, Finance, HR, Supply Chain and bring all business processes under one system.

To be considered, candidates should have

  • Masters Degree in Business Administration, Human Resource Management, Organizational Development preferred or Bachelor’s degree and considerable relevant work experience.
  • Five years relevant work experience as an international HR staff/consultant working in comparable organizations operating in multi-cultural settings in developing countries
  • Experience of working internationally outside home country with first-hand knowledge of the issues affecting expatriate recruitment and retention.
  • Track record in attracting and securing high calibre international candidates through targeted advertising and campaigns and exploiting people and virtual networks, with skills to target advertisements to attract suitably qualified women and developing country citizens
  • Experience in HR systems development including e-recruitment and job evaluation tools.
  • In depth knowledge of infrastructure and facilities available in Nairobi including schools, housing, transport, shopping and leisure and be able to explain the benefits of living and working in Kenya. Knowledge of infrastructure and facilities in other locations where ILRI operates (Mozambique, Botswana, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Senegal, India, Thailand and Philippines) would be an added advantage.
