Optimizations added to trunk version

Some time ago I've added the optimizations to the trunk version on the
SVN repository.

Did anyone manage to run it properly? The change should be
unnoticeable unless you take a look at the actual bytecode and see the
type of the slot$n members - but I'm worried about possible bugs (not
that I have any! :)) that might arise from such a change.
