---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Liza Schlang <lizas...@me.com> Date: Wed, Sep 21, 2011 at 6:41 PM Subject: NPR PAID OPPORTUNITY: Snap Judgment Story Pitches/Themes To: Cc: Jamie DeWolf <ja...@snapjudgment.org> Hello Very Interesting People To Whom I am Connected,
A good friend of mine, Jamie DeWolf, cced, is the Producer and Creative Director of Snap Judgement NPR radio/T.V show (www.snapjudgment.org). I'm specifically hitting you up to be on the short list for submissions! Please feel free to pass along to your short list.
How it works: each radio show has a theme, listed below (more to come if you'd like to be notified of future opportunities). If a theme grabs you, you have something pre-existing, or if you want to write something new, you send him a draft, he pitches it, if he gets a green-light, then he comes to you, or NPR sends a technician to your house or can even rent a studio for you to record it, mix it, master it, and if it makes the cut, it goes on the air!
Everything the show accepts pays well, it's $75 a minute of air time for your first three stories, it goes up after that to $100 a minute, and some stories can be up to 9-12 minutes long, so $600 for an 8 minute story for your first three. Boom. It also has over 500,000 listeners a week and the show is only in its first year, and has been growing rapidly. We're also going to be doing more T.V shows, if you're selected for that, that's also a also paid performances in a sold out theater, filmed live.
Also, if you just have a good story period, SEND IT. Doesn't matter if it's on one of the themes yet. If you got a good one, sometimes we'll even structure an entire future episode around it. LISTEN to the radio show as it'll really give you a clear idea of what they go for and the sound design on the projects.
I want to stress this is a STORY-TELLING show, not a poetry hour per say. Stories can certainly be poetic, and great writing is what we want, but they need to have a narrative arc, a structure of some kind. Something needs to happen. You can see from the links below that they can be wacky, hilarious, super serious, tragic, epic, hard hitting, any mood works, as long as it's a good STORY. Just don't go too crazy with the sex, drugs and rock and roll; its NPR. If you listen to the links, I think you'll get it right away. Links to the type of performances they love are below.
So here's are upcoming themes for you to get submit for! We're open to variations on the theme, anything your mind can take it! Send all your submissions (even if it's just a concept!) to ja...@snapjudgment.org
I'm stoked to be able to get your names out there, so submit often, even if it's just an idea or an anecdote.
1) IT WASN'T ME: Stories about mistaken identities, accusations, getting away with it, being blamed for something you didn't do, confused for someone else, or something else took over you. The Wrong place at the wrong time. Twins and mirrors. Deception and dopplegangers. Innocence and guilt.
2) ALL IN IT TOGETHER: Stories of unity and division. Of crisis and catalysts, reunions. and revivals. What brings us together and what separates us. Tribes, strangers, gangs, and choirs, the moment when we come together. When we become more than an individual. When the world becomes just a little bigger.
3) LOST IN TRANSLATION: Stories about different languages, miscommunication, different world views, confusion and chaos, skewed perspectives, learning a new skill, strangers in strange lands. Linguistics and loss, body language and tied tongues.
4) SPOOKED (Scary Stories). Nuff said.
5) BEST INTENTIONS: Stories about when you had a noble goal with an unexpected outcome. Discovery out of disaster, when calculation meets coincidence, when best laid plans go awry!
6) GLAM: Stories that glitter and glow. Fame. Stardom. Getting your pretty on. Getting posh with it. Rock stars and falls from grace. Blurring Identities, costumes and masquerades.
