Just working through the Cameras API and I've noticed two things that are hopefully easy fixes.

The location of a Wellington camera (id=282) is a bit off. My map places it somewhere off the road in the Ngauranga Gorge, whereas I think it is is much closer to the railway, and certainly over the motorway. (See attached screenshot; the red star is the probably-erroneous location of the camera). There could be others like this, but this is the only one I've noticed.

There are a small number of cameras that are offline at the moment (they display a "sorry for the inconvenience" image instead of a real image), but the tags "offline" and "undermaintenance" still return false when it seems that one or both of them should be true in this case.

Hi Richard,

We believe we have fixed the error in location for Ngauranga camera (was a decimal rounding issue).

In regards to the other issue raised:

"Under Maintenance" is a manual flag that is set by an administrator when a camera is known to be offline or being worked on.

"Offline" is set after a period when the system detects that the image has not been updated and/or it contains a lot of black pixels for approximately 20mins.

The "temporarily unavailable" image is displayed whenever the live image can't be processed by the system for some reason, or one of the above is true.

Temporarily unavailable can be caused by a number of things:

  • corrupt image transferred from the camera to the server (some cameras are on a very remote part of the WAN)
  • collision of reading the image while it is still being written
  • deletion of the image while it's being read, etc.

We are looking at improving the error handling of the webcam image processing to ignore/retry these scenarios.

Thanks again for your feedback on these issues and hope this helps.

The InfoConnect Team.
