URI's Graduate School of Oceanography seeks an Assistant Marine Research
Scientist to work with Tom Rossby, Lew Rothstein, and Mark Prater on the
analysis, synthesis and assimilation of oceanographic data from a recently
concluded field study and ongoing numerical modeling program of the North
Atlantic Current east of the Grand Banks.
The field data, which include a large number of Lagrangian trajectories,
hydrographic stations, ADCP velocity and sea level data (TOPEX/POSEIDON)
will form the foundation for a quantitative synthesis of the current and
surrounding eddy field, on the one had, and the starting point for their
assimilation into numerical simulations of the circulation in the NW
Atlantic. The Princeton Ocean Model and the Miami Isopycnal Model are the
primary numerical ocean tools for this study. The successful applicant will
also collaborate with the PIs in the new NSF-funded field and modeling
program (the Atlantic Climate Change Experiment) to study the circulation of
the subpolar gyre of the North Atlantic ocean. It is important that the
individual be qualified for both experimental and numerical/analytical
aspects of these programs. Individual research initiatives are also
strongly encouraged (preferably ones that are already in place) and the
successful candidate will be expected to collaborate in the development of
new research topics with the PIs after the first year.
This position will support the successful candidate fully for the first
year and 4 months per year for the next three years, thus providing a solid
basis of research support from which to grow.
Requirements include a Ph.D in physical oceanography or closely related
field; two years of postdoctoral experience; a strong background in
experimental and/or computational hydrodynamics or physics; familiarity with
modern scientific programming languages and UNIX workstations; and strong
verbal and written communication skills.
Please indicate any ongoing funded research that you will pursue, whethe
r
in parallel with or independent of the advertised research.
Applications must be received by July 5, 1996.
To apply, please send a statement of interest, resume and the names and
addresses of three references to:
