Although I have not read the book, I just read a wonderful
review (by Fay Ajzenberg-Selove, Physics Today, June 1996, p. 55)
of:
Lise Meitner: A Life in Physics
Ruth Lewin Sime
Univ Calif Press, Berkeley, CA, 1996
ISBN 0-520-08906-5

This same issue has an interesting histogram (p. 52) of the
earning power of various bachelor's degrees (terminal degree,
males 35-44, not necessarily working in the field of their
degree). For those of you who are (or mentor) struggling
undergrads -- science/engineering top the list.

And after a recent (first) trip to northern New Mexico I am
reminded once again of the not-so-tangible rewards of my geology
major -- a remarkable view of the world around us...
