I'm probably going to be starting a faculty position this fall (see my previous
letter) and was trying to get some information on programs to help starting
faculty. I have an old program announcement entitled "Research Planning Grants
and Career Advancement Awards for Women Scientists and Engineers" (NSF 93-130)
which has some interesting information, but I'm not sure if these awards still
exist. I looked up NSF's web site and found a reference to the announcement
within the engineering program's description of various programs, but found no
current program announcements. I did stumble across some faculty awards for
women engineers and scientists which have been discontinued, apparently. Does
anyone know whether NSF still has any research programs specifically targeting
women engineers anymore? I know the CAREERS awards have some awards allocated
for women engineers, but I wondered if there was anything else.

I'd also appreciate hearing about any other awards for starting faculty's
research that anyone knows about. My area of research is environmental
engineering, specifically groundwater remediation design.

Thanks very much for any help,
Barbara

Barbara,

I don't know about NSF's programs for engineers, but the CAREER
program is not targeted at women and minorities; it's for any
scientists in the early stages of their careers. The CAREER
program requires proposals that include a substantial teaching
component as well as research (but the proposals are evaluated
alongside research-only proposals).

My reason for responding to your e-mail is to pass along
one piece of advice (in answer to a question you didn't
ask): if you haven't done so already, you should find
out who the program director at NSF is in your field,
and call that person with your questions. All the NSF
program directors I've met are very willing to talk with
principle investigators, to help them write the strongest
possible proposal. That's especially the case for new,
young scientists and engineers, who may need help wading
through the program announcements. The job of a program
director is to figure out which grants to fund, and their
job is a lot more pleasant if they see grant proposals
that are well-written and appropriate to their program,
so they want to be helpful at the earliest possible stage.

A lot of new faculty are intimidated by NSF program directors, or
don't realize that the program directors will answer questions.
You can also call them if your proposal doesn't get funded;
they can provide useful feedback for how to improve and
resubmit the proposal.

Cheers,

There are also private foundations, both local and national, that you
should investigate - you should also get to know the person in the
University funding office that that identify all funding sources for you -
such a person must exist at Champaign!

UIUC has a wonderful funding information database called IRIS (Illinois
Researcher Information Service) that is
available via the WWW and is free to UIUC researchers. ASU buys a subscription
to the database, as do many
other universities.

My job at ASU is to help faculty find funding opportunities. I encourage people
to learn how to use IRIS
to search for opportunities on thier own (easy if you are familiar with the WWW)
because then researchers get a
better idea of what is in the db and how it fits with their goals.
Additionally, you have the most expertise
about your research area, so you are likely to make better judgements about what
is really suitable for you.

Here's the URL for IRIS: http://surya.grainger.uiuc.edu/iris/
If you are at UIUC, you can contact Aaron Trehaub (a-tr...@uiuc.edu) for more
info about funding information
services provided by UIUC.

To anyone who can help,

About six weeks or more ago a woman with NSF mentioned she would be
willing to field questions re: where to go in NSF for funding (topical).
Does anyone remember her e-mail address or if she is still out there
could she respond to this message. I apologize for wasting space with
this question but my mailer crashed and with it all my saved messages. I
am really interested in talking with her because I am trying to find
funding potential for my current research topic. My advisor is also
working on this but it would be great for me to get started on such
things too.

Thanks to anyone who can help out!!!

Mary,

I'm on this list, and I'll try to help, i.e., direct you to
the right person, if I can.
