International Workshop and Summer School
on
ALGORITHMIC FOUNDATIONS OF GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS
September 16 - 20, 1996
CISM, Udine, Italy

GENERAL INFORMATION:
====================
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are penetrating a growing number
of application domains, including cartography, urban planning, risk
assessment, pollution control, and transport management systems. With
the widespread use of continuously growing databases, efficiency
emerges as the major bottleneck of today's GIS. Commercially available
GIS generally take little advantage of the progress achieved in compu-
tational geometry, and use data structures inherited from relational
database systems that ignore the special spatial relations (like
proximity) on objects embedded in space. Spatial database systems
incorporate only a few of the many algorithms that have been and are
being developed for efficient operations on geometric objects.
This advanced school aims to bring together researchers, in particular
Ph.D. and graduate students in the field of geometric algorithms and
data structures, and software developers from GIS companies. It consists of:
- tutorial survey lectures on the algorithmic foundations of GIS
and on GIS requirements;
- specialized lectures on recent research results within a particular
topic, and on important algorithmic GIS problems;
- research sessions working under the supervision of the lecturers.
LECTURERS:
==========
- Lars Arge, Univ. Aarhus,
- Mark de Berg, Univ. Utrecht,
- Juerg Nievergelt, ETH Zuerich,
- Thomas Roos, ETH Zuerich,
- Stefan Schirra, MPI Saarbruecken,
- Marc van Kreveld, Univ. Utrecht,
- Robert Weibel, Univ. Zuerich,
- Peter Widmayer, ETH Zuerich.
TOPICS:
=======
The following topics will be presented:
- introduction to geometric computation;
- specific geometric algorithms that are useful for geometric computation;
- digital elevation models;
- generalization and simplification in maps;
- algorithms for problems on terrains, including drainage networks and
visualization;
- spatial data structures for external memory;
- algorithms for data on external memory;
- embeddability of graphs into Euclidean space;
- Voronoi methods in GIS;
- precision and robustness of geometric operations;
- designing a computational geometry algorithms library.
All lectures will be given in English. Lecture notes will be distributed
by CISM to the participants during the school.
APPLICATION & ACCOMODATION:
===========================
Further informations and application forms are available via WWW under

or directly from the CISM secretariat:
Centro Internazionale di Scienze Meccaniche (CISM)
Palazzo del Torso - Piazza Garibaldi, 18
33100 Udine, Italy
Phone: +39 (0)432 - 294989 or 508251
Fax: +39 (0)432 - 501523
The registration fee amounts to 1.000.000 Lire (approx. 630 USD) and
700.000 Lire (approx. 440 USD) for participants of Universities and
Academies of Sciences. Participation is limited.
Applicants should send their registration at the latest one month before
the beginning of the course indicating complete address, qualification
and time of arrival/departure. The registration must be accompanied by
the check or a copy of the receipt of the payment of the fee of
1.000.000 Lire (700.000 Lire, resp.).
A limited number of participants from Universities and Academies who
are not supported by their own Institutions can be offered board and/or
lodging at the University Residence (or a middle class hotel). For this,
they should apply to the Secretariat of CISM by July 16, 1996 and enclose
a curriculum and a letter of recommendation by the Dean confirming that
the Institute has no funds for financing their participation. Preference
will be given to applicants coming from countries which have adhered to
CISM and contribute to its operating resources.
A list of hotels in Udine will be sent by CISM's Secretariat upon receipt
of the registration form, or upon request. A limited number of single
rooms are usually available at the Univerisity Residence at the price of
approx. 14 US dollars per person and night. Those interested should apply
promptly through CISM.
