Solaris 2.5 PPP Promlem?

I have recently upgraded from SunOS 4.1 to Solaris 2.5 and have not been
able to get PPP to work completely. I am running a remote dial-up
system to an Internet Provider over a MultiTech ZDX 14.4K modem.
It works but with two problems:
. The transfer rate is less than half what is should be (and used to be
under SunOS 4.1 running a public domain PPP).
. The "demand dialing" works ONLY the first time after the aspppd
starts. When it time's out and shuts down, it fails to re-dial again
unless it is killed and re-started.
Two questions:
1. Does anyone have Solaris 2.5 PPP working correctly in a similar
configuration?
2. Has any experienced similar problems and if so can suggest solutions?
