Connectin RDBMS To Java Applets

I am a student in Athens University and I want to find a way to access a
database (any RDBMS) through Java Applets. I tried to build an Applet with
Symantec Visual Cafe V.3 Database Edition using JDBC - ODBC Bridge
Connection. My applet works fine under Sun Java Applet Viewer and gets
connect to the database file without problems. Under Microsoft Internet
Explorer and Netscape Navigator I get error messages depending to the RDBMS
I use. I also tried the Borland JBuilder V.3 to build my applet but I have
the same problems. What is the way to access a database file(any RDBMS)
under java applets? What Visual Tools I must use?
