Greetings,
I've been quite negligent in updating the FAQ as often as I
should, and I fear I won't have time to give it the attention
it deserves.
If anyone is interested in becoming official FAQ guru, please
contact me.
I'll continue to maintain the boot CD guides - they're due for
an overhaul soon too.
Thanks,

I mailed this to the newsgroup, I think it's also good information foor SCC
- ---------------------------Forwarded Message-------------------------------
Ian Anderson appears on the new CD called "ONE" from Tull's first
guitar player Mick Abrahams. On 4 tracks Ian plays flute mandolin and
harmonica. The ONE album is (almost) completely acoustic and 'solo'.
One is brought out by A NEW DAY RECORDS......the one and only Dave Rees !
There won't be a proper distrubution of the CD (not Dave's fault) and
so the only way to get your copy is to order it by mail.
According to Dave the cances are low the cd will be re-pressed once
the initial stocks are gone.
As also stated in AND # 53 you can order your copy by:
Sending 11 pounds sterling for the CD (or 7 pounds for the cassette)
cash or by eurocheque made payable to D.Rees.
I asked Dave how for instance US (and rest of the world) fans would
have to pay.
The man himself wrote to me that the cost in US Dollars is $20,- CASH
ONLY !!!!

Subject: Over the road, round the corner...
Hello TullPersons,
I've only just recently become a recipient of the St. Cleve;
I've been a Tull fan (in relative isolation as far as fandom goes,
though I've made quite a few "converts" over the years,) since, I
think, early '89.
I'm not going to get into all the details, because that would surely
be mostly annoying; suffice it to say I became a fan when I bought, on
a whim, a cassette copy of Original Masters. From there I bought
TaaB... and was hooked -- I had at least 10 Tull cassettes before Rock
Island was released.
In the issues of this forum I've read, I've seen quite a bit of
Catfish Rising bashing, which actually shocked me quite a bit. A great
deal of expectation had sprung to life in me before this album came
out, and I wasn't dissappointed. "Roll Yer Own," "Rocks on the Road,"
"Thinking Round Corners," and "Gold-Tipped Boots..." are still
favorites of mine.
This said, I have a great deal of trouble actually saying some
album or another is my favorite; I've got many favorites, for many
reasons. I don't have much reservation, however, about saying that
Under Wraps I can mostly live without. I think _A_ is a fantastic
album... perhaps this has something to do with my getting most of my
musical foundation in the early 80's, so that the 80's-sounding synths
don't get to me. On UW, I just don't care for the song-writing, and I
think the synth thing WAS pushed too far... but _A_ has "Working John,
Working Joe," and "And Further On," which are two of my favorite Tull
songs.
Speaking of Under Wraps... I saw someone asking why the Grammy's
handed it the award for best Metal/Hard Rock performance--they didn't.
It was Crest of a Knave, for which Tull's probably gotten more flack
from the general music public than anyone else has gotten about
anything... I'm STILL hearing jokes about that, from all directions.
"They're not heavy metal!" People say. I heard a radio interview with
Ian in which he responded, "The flute is a heavy, metal instrument."
YES!
CoaK I CAN undeniably say is at least in my top 10 favorite Tull
albums... I can't say why, however. The sound of that album is
absolutely incredible, the blend of metal (yes, I personally hear it,)
mixed with folk, while still managing to sound nothing like earlier
versions of the same thing (what I mean is, while Benefit and Aqualung
are definitely mixes of metal and folk, CoaK manages to mix an entirely
different variety of metal in...)
As much as I like the recent Tull stuff, after nearly constant
listening to RtB, I'd have to say it's an improvement over...
everything? As I've said, I can't say a certain album is my favorite,
but if I were FORCED, or asked what 1 album I could keep if the rest of
my disks were destroyed... I guess I'd go with RtB.
It seems quite possible that I should end this
blathering... I've been unable to communicate this sort of thing with
anyone, really, for too long... so it's all trying to come pouring
out. If anyone has any comments, flames, questions... whatever, feel
free to shove them my way here, or by sending e-mail to
CobF...@tcpbbs.com. Oh, and for the statisticians in the group (?)
I'm a 24 year old male from Western Maryland, USA. I'm a
vocalist/guitarist in a progressive metal band (occasionally featuring
flute played by our bassist, who's one of the "converts" I mentioned
earlier,) called Machine's Way.

Hi!
Reading SCC V7 # 47, the posting by bludog3, I reminded one thing.
Correct me if I make a mistake, but somehow I've got a feeling that one
british group did "John Barleycorn" about late 60ies /early 70ies. They
also played some flute in some songs.
Shame to me for my ignorance, but can someone tell me, who they were?

Subject: Changes at Strathaird
Here is the text of an article that appeared in this weeks Glasgow
Herald about changes at Ian's fish farming company. I hope it's of
some interest.
A new day yesterday at Strathaird
IAN ANDERSON, singer-songwriter with the hugely successful Jethro
Tull, is re- linquishing control of the =A3l4m fish-farming empire
built on the proceeds of his music. Mr Anderson 48, has announced that
he is to bow out as chairman of his Inverness-based Ian Anderson Group
to concentrate on his music.
As his business was renamed the Strathaird Group after his former Skye
estate, Mr Anderson was heading for Australia and New Zealand to tour
with Jethro Tull.
The new chairman of the Strathaird Group is Michael Lunn, former
chairman and chief executive of the White and Mackay Group, but Mr
Anderson will continue to hold the majority of shares in the business.
The changes are all part of a drive by Scotland's biggest independent
smoked salmon producer to cast its net wider for a larger share of the
lucrative European market
The company is based in Inverness where it employs people, with other
plants in Buckie employing 100 and on Skye with 45 employees.
It already has customers in France, Belgium and Germany but with the
drive for new international business, the range of quality seafoods is
set to expand in the next few years.
Strathaird supplies the quality end of the world market selling to
Harrods food hall and the Caviar House outlets, trading within the
duty-free sector of European airport terminals and two of the UK's
largest supermarket chains. Although originally exclusively involved
in salmon framing, the company has developed to include white fish,
prawns and scampi.
Michael Lunn said: "I am very committed to working with exciting young
innovative companies and I see the Strathaird Group as having
tremendous potential.
"The group has already made substantial inroads into the quality
continental market and it is important it is able to capitalise on its
range of first class Scottish products."

Well, there has been a lot of crap ploating around this newsletter since
i've been gone.
I think its in everyones interest to dilute out all these boring flame
grilled whopper wars with good honest wit, saucy or not. I am sure Ian
Anderson would appreciate it were he reading. Let us not get to
politically correct, please?
On lighter matters, I am glad to see how Jethro Tull fans like me are
able to mix JT with Yes, Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath. Like all you lot,
JT is probably my favourite band, but you can't beat a good brain blow
out with a bit of Ozzie or Ronnie James Dio or some raw pompous rock from
Ian's cousin(sic) Jon Anderson(YES). I think this is an interesting topic
and
I would like to hear from anybody else with interesting combinations of

I thought I had posted this but hadn't...this was my impression
of Tull in Atlanta. Previously I had posted it to a friend who asked:
So, did he crack the old "you've paid for his car, you've paid
for his house" joke about Martin in the introduction?
I replied:
No, Ian talked about firing Mick Abrahms because Tull needed a flute
player and Martin filled the bill. But then Ian realized Ian was a
flutist so Martin went to guitar and Mick was out a job.
He was very Chatty with 3 to 4 minute intros for each piece.
Chit-chat
Highlights: "Aqualung is 25 years old this year. It doesn't take
much addition to to realize we made a STACK of money on
that one."
Regarding Fatman: Ian launched into a Politically
correct speech about overweight
people like Mick Abrams. He did
not want to be considered a "Fat-ist".
So...he hopes not to offend all the
"Fat Bastards out there"
On how the Eagles stole
the chords of Used To Know
and made Hotel California
out of it: "They opened for us in
1970 and used to stand over
there" (gesturing stage right),
" no wait, overhere"(gesturing
stage left)," watching us.
Later they released Hotel
California, so it only goes to
show it's a SMALL musical
world!"
He went on to say that Hotel
was a better song...very
gracious.
The crowd gave Martin's 1970 wah-wah pedal a standing
ovation.

Musical Highlights: Roots to Branches - intense
In The grip of Stronger Stuff
Mother Goose
Martin's solo stuff...good! really!
Moneylender's Temple
Beside Myself - about a little girl lost

Aqualung (instrumental section only, done in a
middle eastern flavor to the regular
chord changes.)
Jams - Nothing is Easy & Used To Know
Budapest - I love this song
My God - almost note for note transcription
Bouree - played intact for the first time in I
don't know how long
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Songs to put away: Thick as a Brick - He can't sing it anymore, I'm
embarrassed for him. And it's my
all time fav.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
On the whole, Ian's voice was much stronger than the last three times
I saw him.
He was in a wheel chair as a result of his accident in
Lima... He was fabulous in it...made jokes about how he starts
drifting backwards for no reason at all. He said he "Fucking Hates
It!" but feels he shouldn't complain too much because there are
those confined to one for life. I've never seen a man dance in a
Wheelchair before.
During Aqualung, the "leg hurting bad" sequence drew a cheer
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Major dissappointments: 1.) No - Valley, or Wounded, Old &
Treacherous, At Last Forever
2.) The crowd - They talked through the
the quiet material, even
Mother Goose...I understand
that Ian doesn't care for the "hoot and holler" attitude of USA
audiences and I can honestly say the Aqualung, Locomotive Breath
crowd was out in full force.

I don't like Hunting Girl...I wish he would do ANYTHING else off
Songs From the Wood.
Jump Start (encore) is growing on me but I have no idea why he

My friend Continued:
For me hearing it in concert brought RtB alive -
I was disappointed with it till then.
I opinioned: I bought a boot of the European tour, Velvet Flute,
very remarkable sound quality and the edges were
"softer". I too was dissappointed with RTB until
I heard the live versions,
My friend asked:
So, good one was it?
Mr. Chuck: Yes...not the best I have seen but closer to the top than
the bottom. Had the crowd been right, it might have been a
religious experience.

Eagles' Hotel California is remarkably similar to Tull's "We Used To Know"

Hey Folks!
I'm afraid I have some terrible news. Last week my house was broken
into. They took both of my stereos, my expensive electric piano, my
computer (I'm using my father's notebook computer right now), and, you
guessed it, all my CDs. I don't really care about all of my other
CDs, but they took my collection of about 27 Tull CDs. It took me two
years to get all of these CDs, and they were my pride and joy. I am
hoping that I will be making about $350-$400 Canadian, from insurance,
but it will take a fair amount of time to replenish my collection
again. I am hoping that the theives will sell the entire collection
to one of the local used CD stores. If I find my exact collection, I
could end up getting a profit with the insurance money. Luckily, I
happened to have TAAB, MITG, and RTB in my locker at school at the
time of the robbery. Also, the theives were kind enough to leave my
two vinyls: LITP and MU.
On a slightly brighter side of things, I just booked my ticket to the
Tull/ELP concert in Canada's Wonderland, Toronto. I live in
Vancouver, but figure that it is probably worth it to travel across
the country in order to see the most incredible band for the first
time.
Anyways, thanks for sympathizing with me.

Subject: Hello, and out of place songs
I am a new recruit to the SCC, 42 years old & have been a fan of Tull
since 1968.
In SCC #46 Mike Lenox wrote:" Where the hell does "Teacher" come from
on the Benefit album?" Maybe I can shed a wee bit of light on the
subject. In England, "Teacher" was not actually on the album but was,
in fact, the `B' side of "Witches Promise", a song with which it does
fit more snugly. I believe that it may have been added to the album
in the USA only. In the UK, it only appeared on the "Living In The
Past" double album.
With reference to favourite Tull, my personal fave album is Aqualung
(I first saw Tull live on the tour to promote it, supported by Procol
Harum and Tir Na Nog (?) a folk duo from Ireland), followed by Songs
>From The Wood, Stormwatch & Catfish Rising. I find the Roots To
Branches album one of the least readily-accessible albums from the
band, but one which is a definite `grower' and which contains what i
consider to be JT's best song for years, `Valley'.
Finally, I keep seeing references to Ian's accident causing him to
perform in a wheelchair - what happened to him and where? We get very
litrtle coverage of Tull in the media in the UK and I haven't seen
any mention of it.

Subject: Drugs/San Diego&Vegas/Forgotten Masterpieces
My final comments on drugs:
Drugs do one of two things.
1. The enhance what is there nor make up for a lack of it,
chemically. This means that when there is not enough of a substance
(too little neurotransmitter, e.g.), a drug might reset the balance.
This "makes things right." If there is no imbalance, the extra drugs
might enhmight enhance what is there already. A "recreational dug"
might enhance creativity. Examples might be Paul McCartney, who had a
lot of help in the later Beatle years --John Lennon and "mind
expanding" drugs. He might not have accomplished what he did without
help. The recreational drugs also might have helped emphasize what was
already there with some of the San Francisco bands like Jefferson
Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service.
When there are too many drugs there the balance could also be
pushed in negative ways, e.g. over the tenuous edge of sanity some
people held. Examples are Country Joe MacDonald (Country Joe & the
Fish), Syd Barrett and Roky Erickson.
2. Drugs can reduce overabundances of neurotransmitters. I'm
not sure whether this concept has relevance here.
Drugs as relaxants are being found to have a positive effect, when used
in moderation, in recent medical studies. Wine (particularly red) is
an example. Could light marijuana use have the same effect? (I realize
the Berleley Free Clinic studies show the down side of smoking marijuana
is worse than even regular cigarettes, so the positive effect could
easily be outweighed.)
I have my tickets for Tull in San Diego!! Am looking forward to that
weekend. Then two days later, they are here in Las Vegas. I expect the
outdoor venue will prove better than the casino concerthall, but the
Alladin is acoustically very good. And there are no bad seats. This
sure beats Andrew Lloyd Weber in that showroom!. Tull twice in three
days!.
After getting my tickets, I got out some old vinyl disks I hadn't listened
to in years. I haven't acquired CD's, which are more convenient. The lost
(by ME) masterpiece was (particularly the second side of) Stormwatch.
Walk into Light wasn't bad, either. Too bad that in my moves around
the country I forgot about some of IA & JT's work! Shame on me!

Hi everyone,
It's me again - I've written twice before: the first time to say that I am
part of a family of Tull fans and the second time, to share my excitement at
having obtained front row tickets for both gigs in my city.
Well, the excitement is over as I found out yesterday that the Australian
tour has been cancelled. Ian has hurt his leg again (during a show in
Sydney I believe)and he had to go home. Mega sigh...
It would be easy to wallow in self pity at this point - we had front row
tickets to see our favourite band in the world, who come out to Asutralia
once in a blue moon... but we try to focus on Ian instead and send him
healing energy and loving thoughts.
I ask that you all do the same - or whatever it is you do - prayer, ritual
or just think about him and send him silent wishes so that he will get
better and so that we can all see him dance around on stage again soon...
