Last month I wrote gleefully of how I secured second row seats
for the third and last Sydney concert. It was to be tonight
(Tues 14th May). I packed my jeans, T-shirt and sneakers to
change clothes at the office, and my wife was coming in
to meet me.
Just 10 minutes ago she rang to say she heard that the
concert was cancelled. I rang the ticket agency who
confirmed it. The lady read out a press statement( she wouldnt
fax me a copy) which said in effect that after Ian's knee
injury in Lima, he had some surgery done. He was cleared
for the tour, but after performing in Canberra on Saturday
(and maybe Sydney on Sunday, I'm not sure) he needs more work
done and is in Sydney Hospital. The rest of the Australian
and New Zealand tour has been cancelled.

I have been advised by the promoters that Tull's New Zealand tour has
been cancelled. Apparently Ian badly hurt his leg again at one of the
Australian shows and was rushed to hospital for fear of a blood clot
developing.
Bad news both for Ian and NZ fans, and maybe some Australian shows
were canned too?
Best wishes to Ian for a speedy recovery.

Having flown to Sydney specially to catch the Tull shows there, I was indeed
fortunate to see them on Sunday 12th May. Ian did not look well. His voice
was somewhat disappointing although his flute playing was excellent and the
band cooked.
Looking forward to seeing them the following night (I had front row tickets)
I was somewhat shocked to hear on the radio the remaining two shows (13th
and 14th May) had been cancelled. This was broadcast around lunchtime 13th
May. I subsequently found out that Ian was in fact taken to hospital and
admitted for treatment of complications related to his injured left knee.
Things are so grim, the Brisbane concert on 16th May has also been cancelled.
Naturally be some doubt cast over subsequent concert dates although nothing
has yet been announced. No doubt as things evolve appropriate announcements
will be made. The band are very upset and also regretful that they have to
disappoint those fans holding tickets, but they had no option. Things were
already shaky from the moment that Ian injured himself in Lima, Peru some 7
weeks ago. He underwent knee surgery 2 weeks ago but has to keep his leg in
a brace and has been getting around with crutches and a wheel chair. It was
brave of him to continue touring with all this in the first place. They do
however promise to return to Australia to make things up when and if possible.
For those so inclined let's say a prayer for Ian.

Subject: Followup to Tull cancels Australia/NZ TOUR
This was in this morning's 'The Daily Telegraph' (Sydney).
Headline: Bung knee caps off Aussie leg
Jethro Tull front man Ian Anderson was rushed to a Sydney Hospital
yesterday morning, forcing the band to cancel the remainder of their
world tour.
Anderson, who fell from the stage while touring with the band in
South America recently, performed a concert at the State Theatre
on Sunday night in the comfort of a wheelchair.
But after waking yesterday morning in what organisers described
as "acute pain", Anderson was admitted to hospital.
"His leg is a mess," the spokeswoman said of the torn ligament in
Anderson's knee. "His doctors had warned him not to come to
Australia, but he was determined to continue the tour.
"He was extremely upset at having to cancel."
As the vocalist and flautist with the ageing British outfit,
Anderson left the stage of the State Theatre several times
on Sunday and, according to sources, "his singing was strained
and he seemed to be in quite a lot of pain".
Jethro Tull was forced to cancel seven Australian concerts and
several New Zealand dates.
Ironically, prior to the group's arrival in Australia, a press release
was issued in which Anderson assured fans his Peruvian accident
would not affect the group's Australian shows.
"If your passport says you are a professional musician then I
believe you have to turn up for work no matter what," he said.
"A muso just doesn't get to call in sick ... this [injury]
may be an inconvenience but I can certainly do my job."
Apparently, the show does not always go on.

Hello. First Post. Thanks Dave!
Isn't it great that so many of us love Jethro Tull? What would our lives
be without it???
I, too, am a Tull and Rush fanatic from years back. And yes, I seem to
enjoy the older stuff a bit more. I really didn't care for Catfish and I
thought the "new" Tull music era was nearing an end. So I was happily
Blown Away with RtB. WOW. Ian has stratospherically accelerated his
abilities.
I think Andy Giddings is incredible too. The trade-off's among the three
of them make for fantastic jams.
I saw the Rtb tour early on in Detroit, Michigan - The Fox Theatre (great
place) and they played most of the new album in the first set. I wish I
could see "Hunting Girl".
All of these posts from the Grand Variety of Tull fans around the EARTH are
fun to read. The opinions can be strong. I remember being 15 and Rush was
IT!! Everyone else sucked!!! I get a kick out of these posts. I've tried
to open my mind as much as possible and accept or appreciate most types of
music. The big realization I had when I was 19 or so - was that music is
not a competition. There isn't a best. It's what it means to each one of
us, individually. While I may think Dr. Bogenbroom is the all-time
greatest one year, it may be Rock Island the next. And my wife swears that
Dun Ringell is her fave.
It's all great. We Jethro Tull fans are the luckiest music fans anywhere.
Who knew back in 1988 that a FIVE ALBUM set would be released with mostly
NEW (unreleased) material!! That alone, was so great. Then came the 25th,
then the D'Isaster tapes, etc. etc.
I shake my head in wonder and thank my lucky stars for the VOLUME of
creative, progressive, challenging, and contagious sounds of Tull. When
Ian wrote in "Wind Up" ..."I'll just try and write a better song"...who
knew what was in store.
Oh, my theory on the "drug thing" - I think if Ian ever experimented...It
was around the Benefit period..
Listen to your favorite tonight. Thanks. Jim Luke

Actually, the all-time winner is Death, who, as Mr. Death, has quite a few
of those souls who are afraid of him "by the balls", as the song says.
Ever since that song came out, my mental picture of the Grim Reaper, while
still including the oligatory black hooded robe and skeletal figure, now
has replaced the rather worn-out, hackneyed, nay, even pastoral, scythe with
a giant pair of sharp tweezers. Or not so giant, depending upon how
insulting he wants to be. Actually, to be really insulting, he could also
sport a jeweler's loupe, in order to help locate the minuscule gems. But
forgive me, I do go on...

Thanks for maintaining the SCC - I'm usually just a reader, but I've been
inspired by all the arseholes saying "hang it up" "can't sing" "RtB is a
dreadful record" & etc.
Consider the fate of some of Tull's original contemporaries like...
Deep Purple - career crashed
Genesis - sell out city
The Who - time for another 'final' tour
Pink Floyd - pale imitations of former selves
Yes - really, Trevor Rabin and all that, hmmm, lost it
Led Zeppelin - gone
J. Geils - the party's over
Bowie - stranded
Zappa - dead
Rush - please, they were never in this league
And many less durable who have come and gone
And many musical fashions that have come and gone
And all the while, Ian's music has continued to evolve, dare I say
"progress." We haven't seen a truly bad record yet - each one shows creative
growth, he just keeps on maturing as an artist right through the present,
intelligent records like Divinities and RtB. The test of time sorts the
talent from the crap, and Tull have obviously passed it. If they never
toured again that would be sad, but he sings fine on record and I for one
would continue to buy them..

Hello all!
THis is my first SCC posting, and as most people introduce themselves
I will too.
I am a first year Chemical Engineering student at Aston,(Birmingham)
in England. I have been a Tull fan for years, (I'm now 19) after
first hearing Crest of a Knave that my Father owned. After enjoying
this, I checked out the Tull section in the local music shop, and
bought Broadsword and the Beast, mainly for the art cover, but ater
that I was HOOKED!
I saw them on the 25th aniversary tour and was impressed, but it
sounds like the current tour is even better!
My favourite Tull albums range from 76-91, (yes, I do like Catfish
Rising a lot) but I'm not keen on Aqualung.(This is just my
opinion,so please no condemnations for it!).
But I was shopping up town and discover the new version, costing 18
pounds, with a small book attached to it. Can anyone shed more light
on what it contains? There is no song list on it nor does it say what
the book is. Does anybody know? If so, please enlighten me!
Thanks, John.

Subject: Five or six points anout Ian and related....
Dear Tull-ites far and wide,
I posted last year in the V7 N 60-70 area. I sat back and read for a
while. This year I collected, without reading, the first 30 issues.
Work prevented adequate reading of the text until now. So, lo and
behold, after reading 18 or so issues, I find I am way behind on
certain things. And, I comment as briefly as I can on what is going
on. I missed them in Dallas on the 6th - boo hoo!!!
First, dave, I continue to increase in respect for your non-partisan
participation. You seem to allow just as much from Tull nay sayers as
the other 'more popular' side. I applaud you for this.
Second, the hoopla over arguing points on Tull. It's great that our
intellectual list has such spirited comments and ideas (and I am not
for censoreship), but I do believe that losing your cool verbally
indicates a partial defeat to most of us anyway. Swearing is optional
(Ian does it so much).
Third, about Ian's voice and style these days, I have always preferred
his music to all else (in- cluding the Beatles -- though I think they
are equivalent in many ways). I grew up with him and the way he was
and the way he's become. I like all the phases for their own purpose.
I for one, have written songs around that day's ability and I expect
most do - you can't write what you can't play. These boys play many
instruuments quite well. As I grow older, I find myself more in the
mood for his quieter stylings of recent years (makes sense) as well as
all the soft stuff from SU, B, Aq and TaaB.
Fourth, you young people who feel no one around you understands this
great love you have for the group - to you I say welcome - you've come
to the right place - I wish it had been here a little sooner for me
but what can you say? In 72, I was luckyo to get an ACOUSTIC MODEM
HOOKUP.
Fifth, I do wish (if anything) that someday Ian feel rested and
unbothered enough to 'connect' with us - not just the Dave that runs
'A New Day' or some guy who's dropping cover songs at his door. Why
can't we - the loyal followers - under the protection of the Internet
- - get an address that would allow us to quietly and reverently display
our enthusiasm and insights to him and have him respond? Remember in
Feb or Jan, 1996 when he and Martin were on a 'call in' radio show
late at night? I tried all hour to get through only to be answered at
the end, hear their voices but be told that it was over. I am glad
that my respect for Tull is reinforced by the obvious love of others
for it but, I somehow hoped he'd be different and more accessible
especially with the firewall of the Internet. Most of them do sooner
or later.
Sixth, Love all albums except CR which I will listen more to to cure
me of that. Love 'At last, forever' best of the new album. Would
love to get boots having all mainstream vinyl, cassette and (being a
die hard recordable media lover who just broke down to CD in lieu of
DAT) some CDs. I also got this cool poster of Ian for Shure
microphones (for free!!!) that says "Sound of the Professionals".
It's my most prized possession of Tullery other than original untorn
tickets to Fillmore West in the 60's.
"Shout if you will, but that just won't do; I, for one, would rather
follow softer options. I'll take the easy line, another sip of wine
and if I ignore the face you wore, it's just a way of mine to keep
from flying colours..." - IA (BB)
Think, share and learn from each other, oh my brothers (and sisters
too - we know you're out there, Paige),

One *possible* explanation has to do with the fact that people have
more than one register to their voices. Men have a chest voice, a head
voice, and a falsetto, while women have a chest voice, a middle voice,
and a head voice. If Ian was trying to push his chest voice up into a
range where he really should have been using head voice, the result
might be what you witnessed. Learning how to use those registers
generally requires some amount of vocal training, and I don't know
whether Ian has ever had any serious voice training. This could also
explain the problems that some people report with his voice at some
concerts, as with proper training he would be able to sing every night
without problem. Note that it is not uncommon for the vocal range to
drop a bit with age, and for the vocal color to get *darker*. So Ian's
voice should not sound the way it did 25 years ago, but it should be
capable of sounding in ways that were not possible for a younger
voice. Trade-offs abound.

I never thought anything Tull has done sounds like anyone else's music, but -
when listening to Law of the Bungle Part II on the Nightcap cd, it reminds me
very much of Carnival Fugue by the Dutch group Focus. I'm not sure why, maybe
it's the tasty bass bits. Anyone care to comment?
I would not give up one bit of APP, but I find myself wishing the Chateau tapes

times an incredible coming together of guitars/flute/drums/piano...

Fellow Tullsters,
Where do I begin? I found this wonderful news group while browsing
the net one day. I was quite surprised that there are so many of us Tull
fans out there. I have been a fan since 1975, when I first discovered
Aqualung while searching through my friends brother's 8-track
collection. As soon as I shoved the tape into the player I was hooked. I
couldn't get enough. I was only 12 at the time and I can remember saving
my allowances to buy all of the Tull I could get my hands on.
From that point up to the release of UW I bought every Tull
album/8-track/cassette that came out, filling in the gaps from earlier
releases when I could. I refused to buy UW when it first came out. You
see, I was channel surfing one day and stopped on MTV where the "Lap
of Luxury" video was playing. At first I didn't recognize it as Tull. Then I
saw Ian and Martin. In some strange way I was mortified. I felt betrayed
by the very band I had supported for almost 10 years. This wasn't Tull!!
I quickly turned off the TV and vowed never to buy another Tull album.
I spent the next 3 years avoiding the "J" section in the music stores.
Then in 1987 I heard a tune that took me back to the "glory days", "Farm
on the Freeway". They were back, the Tull I had shunned since UW. I
was at the record store at light speed and bought CoaK.
I know, I'm rambling...
I've since replaced my Tull 8-tracks/etc. with CDs. I have all of the
released Tull, even UW (which I have given another chance and I even
like most of the tracks). I'm still searching for the CD version of the 20th
Anniversary set (can someone help me?), but I've got it on cassette.
I've never been to see Tull, but I'd sell my soul to have the chance.
The concert reviews provided by this news group are outstanding.
Every time I read one I feel like I've just spent the evening with Ian and the
boys. I also find the quotes of IA by Mike very enjoyable, keep them
coming.
Like the rest of you I have my favorite Tull albums, although each is
special in it's own right. My favorites change almost as much as the
weather, but currently the tops are 1)HH 2)MitG 3)TaaB 4)LitP. From
there on it's hard for me to choose, so I won't.
What do I think of RtB? Love it. I also loved RI and CR. The only Tull I
really have to be in the mood for is, you guessed it, UW.
Long live Ian, long rock Tull.

Responding to a few of the questions Jim Morman raised--
There are extra tracks on the cd of UW because it was released at the
beginning of the cd-over-vinyl revolution--cds can hold more music than
a 12" vinyl disk, and so record companies often put "bonus" tracks on
the cds hoping to entice more people to purchase them. Now that cds
have taken over, it's no longer necessary to offer such enticements.
I don't think that UW is altogether a concept album, though the spy-story
theme does run through Under Wraps--Euro Legacy--LTSE--RFM--Nobody's Car--
Heat. Maybe European Legacy doesn't belong there, either, but LTSE
seems *so* much like a sequel to it. But I also can't see a really strong
plot line, and the other tracks on the album seem plainly unrelated.
Personally, I think European Legacy is one of the greatest raw-desire songs
ever written, and it alone means that this album doesn't need forgiving!

>werent the only ones...>
How did I miss that back in '84?? I was a huge Maiden fan back then;
before they lost their edge. They did a b-side of Cross=Eyed Mary
that was pretty much what you'd expect of a Maiden/Tull mixture.
Thanks to the SCC I've been listening to UW more in recent weeks. I
remember a comment of Ians' that 'A' didn't quite fit in with Tulls'
catalog as a whole...seems to me that UW fits that comment much more.
Not that that's bad; actually it's what makes UW a classic Tull album:
not what we expected. If it weren't for those ^%$#@
electronic/programmed drums, I'd like it a lot.
> So what does make a good Tull album?? anyone know??
Oooh, good one! Real drums for one thing :) Flute. Ian. Martin. I
don't know, I like 'em all!:)
> Ian said, he did not take drugs. Ever thought about, that, at a few
>occasions, sometimes, there was rumor that Tull is not a one-man band?
> Didn't we forget that other members of the band influenced Tull's music and
>they probably never talked about not taking any drugs?
In the 20th Anniv. box, Glenn Cornick said about his leaving the band:
"I didn't do drugs of any sort, and nor did any of the others-but
whereas they didn't make a habit of getting drunk or chasing women, I
did....and it was a bit stifling to be the only guy in the band doing
it. It didn't affect my attitude towards the music, but it divided the
group-we never seemed to have any unity or community spirit-and after
big discussions we agreed that because there was so little
communication I'd be better off leaving, which I did"
It also says he's a pet food representative in L.A.
A little more revealing than the 25th Anniv. video, eh?

Tull has changed more than most bands; while still keeping a good
chunk of their core audience. Therefore, suggesting one album only
serves to deprive you of other stylistic forays:) Here are my
so-humble suggestions:
Old Tull: Stand Up(1969)
Art Rock Tull: Minstrel In The Gallery(1975)
Rustic Tull: Songs From The Wood/Heavy Horses/Stormwatch(my favorite
period...couldn't pick one:))
Super Experimental Tull:Under Wraps(1984)
Latter Day Tull: Crest Of A Knave(1987)
These just popped into my head as I sit here and type...I hope my dates are
right? This is a good start, but you really need 'em all:)
