Just received this from the promoter here in Australia in relation to the
cancellation of the JT tour.

======================================================================
JETHRO TULL - ROOTS TO BRANCHES TOUR - MAY 1996
======================================================================
Monday 13th May, 1996
Urgent Media Release

JETHRO TULL TOUR CANCELLED
--------------------------
Ian Anderson's medical condition has worsened and as a result
tonight's show and subsequent shows in Australia and New Zealand have
been cancelled.

Vocalist, flautist and consummate showman Ian Anderson arrived in
Australia a few days ago on crutches, to begin his Australian tour,
announcing that he would perform in a wheelchair - Anderson had torn a
ligament after falling on his left knee in Lima, Peru.

After undergoing surgery, he was given the all clear to travel, under
instructions and guidance from his English surgeon and Doctor. He
undertook the Australian tour and performed his first Australian
concert in Canberra on Saturday night. Last night was the first show
in Sydney at the State Theatre. After the concert it has become
evident that the complications following surgery necessitate urgent
admission to a Sydney Hospital.

Regretfully Mr. Anderson finds it unavoidable that Jethro Tull must
cancel its Australian and New Zealand dates.
======================================================================

I also received a covering letter with the above press release which
stated that Ian has been advised by his specialist that he will be in
hospital for at least another 10-14 days and will be unable to travel
back to the U.K. until he has fully recovered.

The promoter has also asked that all enquiries and best wishes be
directed to their office. I'd rather fax him at the hospital but
unfortunately I live in Melbourne and have no idea where he is.

Mail can be directed to :

Faxes can be directed to: 61-3-9242-1020

They promise that all correspondence will be forwarded to Ian immediately.

So get faxing!!!!!!!!!!

Subject: Chrysalis Press Release and Words From IAN Himself!!!

Recieved this fax the other day:
IAN ANDERSON SERIOUSLY ILL IN HOSPITAL IN SYDNEY
ALL CONCERT DATES TO BE CANCELLED

Follows for immediate release a statement from Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull
This was sent overnight from Sydney, Australia. Jethro Tull had just
started a tour of Australia and New Zealand when Ian had to be admitted
to the hospital.
Tull were then to go on tour in Europe, Poland, Germany, Slovak Rep.in
July. All these dates are now cancelled. The North American and Canadian
tour in August and the UK dates in November are now unconfirmed until we
have further news on Ian's condition.

A STATEMENT FROM IAN ANDERSON:

Following an accident in Lima, Peru in the middle of March when I tore a
ligament, I had surgery in England on my return from the rest of that tour
in which I performed a concert in a wheelchair.

After the surgery I was advised by the doctors that I would be fit to
perform the tour in Australia and New Zealand once again, however in a
wheelchair. Unfortunately, after the second concert in Australia some
complications were discovered and I was admitted urgently to a Sydney
hospital suffering from a serious thrombosis condition. Currently,
doctors are working to stabilise this problem and will decide in due
course when it is safe for me to make the return trip to the UK. I have
been advised that a subsequent period of three months will have to elapse
before I may consider any further travel.

I deeply regret the need to cancel our tous of New Zealand and Australia
as well as the many European concerts due to take place in June and July.
Beyond that, our concerts must remain unconfirmed until this potentially
serious condition has been made stable.

Hi all.

I just looked at Chrysalis' Jethro Tull WWW page. It seems ALL concerts for
the foreseeable future are cancelled unless IA's leg miraculously heals. I
had thought the cancellation affected only the recent Australian and NZ
dates, but Chysalis say everything up to and including the UK tour in
_NOVEMBER_ are scrapped, presumably including the JT/ELP concerts. That leg
must be well ****ed! I hope they're wrong, but I think Chysalis'
announcement is fairly definitive.

NOW who thinks Tull should have a new front man...? [THAT IS A JOKE!]

Does anyone out there watch the television programme "Heartbeat"? Well it
seems to have a bit of a connection to Jethro Tull.
I remember one episode where Nick Rowan, the Yorkshire policeman, has to
go back to London (where he's originally from) for a while. When he was
walking around the streets of London, what song did they play as background
music? None other than "Living In The Past."
Fylindales Moor is in the area that the show is set in. Another episode
dealt with a demonstration against the Fylingdales Early Warning Station
(but they didn't play Fylingdale Flyer).
The last, though perhaps less obvious connection, is where the Sergeant
was reading a "Rupert the Bear" book to some children at hospital. The last
line was "... for there were folk out there who would do 'im 'arm" (so I'll
sing you no lullaby).

Well I found it interesting,
Cheerio.

Hello Tullians

This is my first posting to SCC. Apparently I'm not the only one to enjoy
reading SCC.
In SCC V7 #44 there were some dates of concerts all over europe. Does
anybody know, if there are going to be concerts in Switzerland and if they
are also with ELP?

There is one thing left. My little son of 13 months now is also one of the
youngest JT fans I guess. He always makes his funny 'jumping' when I play
JT. He definitly likes RtB and RI, so do I. Also the older stuff.

Thanks and

Just a note to acknowledge the extended period in which Martin played Hamer

guitars were essentially Les Pauls with a double cutaway, they did help define
that fat sound on many Tukk recordings.

Subject: Drugs

I have the good fortune of owning a copy of "Jethro Tull - Complete
Lyrics," published by Palmyra. In addition to the lyrics, Ian
Anderson provides some thoughts on each Tull album. I'm enclosing an
excerpt that may interest those of you discussing or interested in
"Ian's drug use" or "Ian and Drugs" as covered in earlier editions.
The following quote occurs during a discussion of Aqualung:

The term "lush seperation" in Slipstream could mistakenly be
uderstood as a reference to alcohol, although it isn't. No alcohol
references then or now, and certainly no references ever, as far as
I'm aware, that have to do with drugs! I say that because on the
album Benefit there was a line in "To Cry You A Song that said
"Flying so high. . ." - and would you believe it: it never occurred
to me that this might be taken as a reference to drugs, but people
back then thought that I was a serious druggie. And I don't think
anybody believed me when I said that I didn't take drugs - I really
didn't. And haven't. So to me it was really very naive and silly
thing to have written, something that was actually an aeroplane song,
singing about being away on tour or something, about some girl friend
I had at the time. BUt how many people will have heard that and
thought "Hey man, cool, peace." So that's an example of very, very
bad lyric-writing, because I created something which was almost bound
to be misunderstood. And yet it just didn't occur to me what I was
saying. I wasn't really that familiar with the vernacular of my
contemporaries.

So I suppose I'm sympathetic to people like John Lennon saying "Lucy
in the Sky With Diamonds" isn't a drug song - I still think it is.
And most people probably still think that "To Cry You A Song" is a
drug song, which I promise you it wasn't. So references to drugs and
alcohol and that sort of thing you probably won't find intentionally
in any of the songs. At least not anything extolling their virtues or
suggesting that I am drugged or drunk.

I think only a couple of times have I had too much alcohol, but it has
been in the privacy of my home. In fact, at times when I've been
maybe working very late and I just haven't realised how long I haven't
eaten, and I've just had a drink and come into the house and gone "Uh,
oh, I don't feel well." This happened to me twice actually in about
the last ten years, and my wife found it extremely amusing as I was
crawling up the stairs to the toilet to try and be sick. End quote.

There you have it.

Howdy Tullsters, from way out west here in Arizona, USA!
I was watching an old rerun of Hunter (Fred Dryer, ex NY Giants fooball
player turned actor. He has a newer show now called Lands End) last
night. To my amazement, Locomotive Breath was the featured song. I
didn't catch the title of the episode, but I think Ed O'Neil - Al Bundy,
in Married With Children - was the guest star.

TV Guide gave this description of the show:

In their search for the killer of a parol officer, the detectives are
one step behind the victims friend.

Fairly long portions of LB were played at least 3 times and I sat there
thinking, "Hunter & Tull, cool"!

Subject: With You There To Help Me

Dear Dave Steiner(Great Moderator) and all Friends Involved in SCC!
Thanks for Being There To Help Me. Tull has touched me very
profoundly for some time now- since my early teens in the early
seventies. I grew up in Philly, and first saw the Band at the
Spectrum, probably in the mid-seventies. I remember that Theodore
snuck his Bong in under his long (Mentholyptus Junkie/AquaLung), Navy
P coat. That was just a bit of a Historical Reference- Life was
certainly Different then- Kind of Sweeter.. Remember..?
Most recently caught the Roots To Branches Show here in Pittsburgh,
this past Fall(Nov. 16, '95) Tremendous Show, No? A bit of a shame
that the Band must've had to play a crappy college
auditorium/basketball type of place and would've really sounded bad,
but for the fact that Sue and I got very excellent seats about twenty
just right feet in front of the stage-right speaker tower. The Band
was excellent!! A good mix of old classics and just about all of Roots
To Branches, though I really crave the more obscure stuff, like
INSIDE, and WITCH'S PROMISE,
DR. BOGENBROOM, etc. But I'm not Whining- Regarding the obvious rift
between die hard fans and those that claim to dislike "later Tull", I
have such a love for the Band, that I try to accept it all as the
growth of wonderfully talented Musicians. Sure- It's not all going to
be TEACHER, or SWEET DREAM, but it's all good, and I'm sorry to say
that we can't live forever, nor can The Lads, so Dig It while you can!
Gotta go, Sue makes terrible fun of my adoration, but Tull just
makes me feel good!
You can be sure that you'll hear from me again, and I welcome words
from any of you. Try to Dance When You Hear Music, OK?

Subject: tull memories from India
Date: Fri, 3 May 1996 22:06:43 -0700 (PDT)
From: "V.Shankar" <sha...@ichips.intel.com>

Hi,

I thought I would share some JT related memories from during my
India days. I was only into listening to Tull music (from when I was about
12 years old), until during my second undergraduate year (at
the University of Roorkee), when I started learning to play the acoustic
guitar from another student. I was, within a few months, inducted to play
bass in a rock band formed a couple of years earlier consisting of mostly
senior undergraduate students. The bass player had quit and I was asked
to play out of sheer desperation on their part, since no-one else knew how
to play the guitar or was interested in joining the band. I played for
only one year with them after which after the band disbanded
due to most of the players graduating. 2 of them (the lead guitarist and
drummer) went on to become professional musicians based in India.

In India we have a number of inter-university cultural festivals and
in some of the bigger festivals, the main attraction was the rock
music competition. The prize money was always quite hefty (for us poor
students back then) and these concerts had a professional audio setup
(which means they were pretty loud!). Each band would be given about an
hour to perform. Almost all bands would play only covers. Original songs
were rare, and hence were awarded some extra points but the audience was
not particularly interested in hearing original songs.

Maybe because our intention was to do well in these competitions, we were
very much into playing complex songs. Rhythm complexity was our biggest
turn-on. So obviously Tull (and Rush) were our favourite bands to cover.
We used to play Aqualung (which was a huge favourite among the audience)
and Minstrel in the Gallery. We performed the entire electric portion of
MITG. Tull used to be pretty popular in the festivals that we played in.
In one of then (at BITS Pilani, for the benefit of the Indians in SCC)
among the 4-5 bands who played in the final stage of the competition,
there were 3 Tull songs played - Aqualung (performed by us), Locomotive
Breath, and Cross Eyed Mary. The band who played "Cross Eyed Mary" had
played "Acres Wild" the previous year. We came second in that competition.
We were blown away by a Jazz-oriented group who played much more complex
music (a different interpretation of Locomotive Breath, and "Spain" by
Al Jarreau, among other songs). Other cover songs we used to play were of
bands like Rush (Red Barachetta, YYZ, Jacob's ladder), Led Zep,
Pink Floyd, Queen, Deep Purple etc.

After I came to the US I bought an excellent acoustic guitar and learnt to
play some acoustic tull songs like Wondering Aloud, Mother Goose, and
TAAB edit #1. My respect for Ian Anderson's musicianship deepened even more
after working out those songs. Even without a drum section, he weaves in
tricky changes in rhythm. Not many people would do that treatment with an
acoustic song.

I have just been rambling on. Thanks for reading ....

Subject: Remix & Remaster

Remixing and remastering are two similar procesees with completely different
outcomes.
Simply...
Remastering is when an engineer goes back in the studio, finds all the
original master tapes that the parts of the songs were recorded on, and puts
the pieces back together, BUT IN THE EXACT SAME WAY! He can clean up
background and other noises, take out hisses and pops, etc. Since we're now
in the digital age, these 'clean' versions will last forever.
Remixing is when the engineer takes all the masters of the song parts, and
puts them back together, BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY. The drums now sound like
cannons, not coffee cans; an alternate chorus is put in, etc. Listen to the
remixed version of Songs From The Wood. The guitar intro starts much
earlier, and one of the choruses is changed. On Cross-Eyed Mary, much
reverb is added, and the background guitar behind Ian's flute on the intro
is really brought to the foreground.
I find it a refreshing change of pace to hear these favorites in a new
light. Rumor has it that ALL the Tull albums are going to be reMIXed soon.
We'll see!

But I think , Jethro is dead after Crest of a Knave. I was not buyng

Roots to Branches, so I wondered and buy it. But , it was a
disappointment again for me, such as Rock Island. The music may be
good, but not as good as Aqualung, Thick as a Brick ... First of all
; the drummer is awful. After Clive Bunker, he is like a child. I
can't remember the name of the drummer, butat my opinion, he thinks
that he is playing at a
Raggy group, the melodies he plays are always same. Can you compare
him with Clive Bunker, or the one at Aqualung, Minstrel in the
Gallery, Thick is a Brick ? And at the older albums, there is an
orchestration , but the new ones are very simple with respect to
olders . But I couldn't understand why ? Ian, Martin Barre, David
Pegg are all the older guys, but why are the albums are not so good ?
