Try RFC 1771 and the GateD html documentation. Or, if you want the basics,
look at "TCP/IP Illustrated Volume 1" by Stevens (chapter 10) or "Routing
in the Internet" by Huitema (Part III).

Definitely - there are ISPs which use GateD BGP-4. However, I'd hardly call
this a complex network environment - you advertise your CIDR block(s) to
the ISP and advertises DEFAULT back to you.
