a) The undergroound rifle range was far too dim for my eyes to allow
proper aiming. I was virtually guessing where my front sight would
be on the target. One would have needed bright light for better
focussing.
b) The carbine shot about 80 cms too high. I could not print proper
groups on the UIT target, even though I tried to hold at the lower
frame.
c) Durability issue: a Carcano M 91/38 was not built for the recoil
of a 8 x 57 IS. What does this mean ? :-) It means that the carbine
can take the increased pressure and recoil without problems.
<Important addition: the 8 x 57 IS modifications have two sturdy recoil
screws going sideways through the stock. Without them, the above statement
would not be correct, since the beech stock would probably develop cracks>
Its shooter, however, cannot. Small curved steel buttplate, hammering
into my shoulder like a chisel. And I was only wearing a shirt and
a thin sweater. No recoil pad, not even a sandbag available. Ouch.
