Today's Santa Rosa (Cal.) Press-Democrat carries a wire service story about
kitchen table dealers. The example used in the story does indeed sound like
a shady character. Of a bit over 400 firearms this guy in Sacramento
purchased in two months, 104 have been found at crime scenes or in the
possession of convicted felons or teens. The article claims that about
300 are "unaccounted for." It's not clear from the article if this means
that they haven't been used in a crime, or if literally there's no paperwork
to explain where they went.

This may be one of those bad apples who gets a license and sells guns in a
hurry to people of questionable background. I've sold about 80 guns over
the last 12 years, and I have NEVER been asked for a trace on any of them.
This guy managed to get 25% of sales turn up in criminal hands in less than
two years -- that's hard to picture as coincidence. Let's make sure that
we don't try to defend a particular kitchen table dealer's actions when this
comes up.

Today's Wall Street Journal has a piece on the editoral page by one of
Paul Tsongas' campaign people musing about the dangers that Whitewater
poses to Democrats, and at what point it might be necessary for the
Convention to jettison Clinton and replace him with Gore, because of the
danger that additional damaging evidence will come up, and take down not
only Clinton, but the rest of the Democratic Party for defending him.
Worth reading.
