Fsck has a bug where it can't handle file systems > 2 Gb. You'll have to
split the drive up. Probably have alt in one partition and the rest in
another.

There is apparantly a patch available directly from BSDI (not an
official patch) that allows you to create a 4GB partition.
The v2.0 BSDI release (whenever it comes out - 6 weeks late so far
and counting - which isn't bad if you compare that with some other
notable OSes), will allow huge partition sizes much greater than 4GB.
The latest rev of both INN and cnews allows you to span your news
spool across multiple partitions - both can use symbolic links to
keep referenced articles together. So the Right Now solution is
to create 2 2GB partitions, put alt on one, the rest of news on the
other partition (for example) and go to it.
