My name is Austin Ekwujuru. Am currently the Chief Executive of Basic Rights Watch.

Basic Rights Watch {BRW} is a Nigeria based non-governmental organization {NGO}, founded in 2016, whose mission is to use creative ideas and technology to simplify public information, use available data to empower marginalized groups and communities. BRW is committed to using monitoring and evaluation to create effective and sustainable programs that supports a community of active citizens to make effective use of public information in demanding accountability for institutional improvement and efficient services delivery. We are currently working in Nigeria.

Our focus is on promoting open financial government, through timely access to public information, transparency and accountability, advocacy, citizen engagement, governance and democracy, youth development, extreme poverty eradication, improving participatory budgetary processes and promoting human rights. BRW has mainstreamed and broaden conversations on open government across communities and public space, with an audience of more than 500,000 people. So far, BRW has been able to reach over 1,000,000 young Nigerians across 75 tertiary institutions and 20 local communities through digital and physical spaces.

Kindly find attached the 2019 National Freedom Of Information Compliance Ranking Report For Nigeria. This ranking was done by Basic Rights Watch and five other partners. The ranking measures compliance of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) of 2011. The ranking is aimed at entrenching accountability and transparency in public and security sector institutions by ensuring MDAs liberate data and citizens have timely and unrestricted access to public information. Improved disclosure practices of MDAs will positively impact how public resources are manged and utilized as citizens would have necessary information which would allow them to actively participate in governance.

In addition to the attached FOI Compliance Ranking Report, is a short video report of the event by AIT (https://drive.google.com/file/d/120Sn0Gpc6Dl_S1x0l6sfKUYXknU66kpi/view?usp=sharing), as well as the press report (The Launch Of 2019 National Freedom Of Information Compliance And Transparency Ranking by ICIR).

Am sure this report will interest you. Kindly share with your network as well.

Look forward to your feedback.

Kind Regards
Austin
