
Medical Humanities Group of UCMS & GTB Hospital, Delhi and its special interest group on disability (Infinite Ability) organized Confluence-VI . Confluence is the medical humanities lecture series of UCMS which is the first medical college in India to introduce Medical Humanities to medical students.
Medical humanities may be defined as an interdisciplinary,and increasingly international endeavor that draws on the creative and intellectual strengths of diverse disciplines,including literature, art, creative writing, drama, film,music, philosophy, ethical decision making, anthropology,and history, in pursuit of medical educational goals.
In the sixth edition of Confluence (where reputed but non-medical persons are invited) Mrs Madhu Bala Sharma spoke on ‘Broadening Horizons:Looking beyond disability’. 100% Visually challenged Madhubala is also a recipient of the National Award for Empowering Persons with Disability 2009 in the ‘role model' category.
The objective was to have a clear understanding throughout your workplace culture of Modern Disability. She tackled several myths associated with disabilities and focused on abilities of persons with disabilities. On the occasion Principal OP Kalra presented Ms Madhu with a specially designed brailed memento. The coordinator of Infinite Ability Dr Satendra Singh stressed that it is possible to adapt to a disability and Prof Navjeevan Singh (Coordinator, Medical Education Unit) advocated to focus more on the abilities of persons with disabilities. The event also kick started activities lined up to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
