Sharing a Netflix account with someone else outside your home? You're not alone, and Netflix isn't happy about it. The company is now charging its account holders $7.99 for each additional user.
In a detailed letter to shareholders last month, Netflix explained the plans for a broad rollout, including the U.S., as one that will grow the paid membership base, therefore increasing profits, rather than reduce these metrics.
Netflix began sending an email to account holders with a membership that is being shared with someone outside of their household. In the email, the company explains that users outside the member's household will have to either get their profile transferred to a new paid membership, or the account holder can have an extra $7.99 added to their monthly bill to continue sharing.
Paid sharing was rolled out in the first quarter of 2023 in Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal. "In Canada, which we believe is a reliable predictor for the U.S., our paid membership base is now larger than prior to the launch of paid sharing and revenue growth has accelerated and is now growing faster than in the U.S.," the letter read.
When a paying member transfers someone's profile to a new membership, the person outside the account holder's household will have to pay for their own subscription to be able to keep their watch history and list, as well as all other pertinent information from their profile.
Netflix explains it saw initial cancel reactions in each of the three countries it tested the paid sharing program when the news were announced. But then it saw increased acquisition and revenue as the "borrowers" activated their own paid accounts and existing members began adding extra shared accounts.
Netflix reports current account sharing has reached over 100 million households among its subscribers. "Widespread account sharing undermines our ability to invest in and improve Netflix for our paying members, as well as build our business," the company shared in the letter.
The original plan was to roll out the paid sharing program broadly in the first quarter of 2023, but the company decided to delay this initiative. "We're pleased with the most recent launches of paid sharing, and while we could have launched broadly in Q1, we found opportunities to improve the experience for members," the letter reads.
Now that Netflix rolled out paid-sharing to accounts in the U.S., you'll have to set a primary location for your account, and any other people using your Netflix subscription outside this location will lose access, unless you choose to pay for the extra members. You'll still be able to log into your account on your phone or tablet, or a new TV at a vacation rental or hotel.
The streaming service company also announced some changes to its new ad plan back in April, which lets users pay a lower price for a Netflix subscription that includes ads. In the letter, the company reports its average revenue per member (ARM) for accounts with ads, including the subscription fee and the ad revenue, is greater than that of its standard plan.
Seeing the positive revenue and minimal switching to an ad-free subscription, Netflix is improving the experience for ads plan to include 1080p-resolution video quality, up from 720p, and two concurrent streams.
Only people who live under the same roof can share accounts, the streaming company says. So you have two options: transfer your friends and family members mooching off your account to a new membership or share your Netflix account for an additional $8 monthly fee.
The popular streaming service used to encourage sharing Netflix credentials with friends and extended family. But it has changed its tune as subscriber growth slowed amid growing competition and a return to pre-pandemic viewing habits.
Cowen senior research analyst John Blackledge estimates that Netflix could pick up 2.1 million new U.S. subscribers from the initiative. Netflix accounted for 7.3% of total TV viewing in February 2023, according to Nielsen.
Moody's Investors Service says the password-sharing initiative could cause "short-term subscriber discontent and disruption but presents the company with a material revenue growth and margin expansion opportunity."
There is some risk, however. Netflix lost more than 1 million users in Spain in the first three months of 2023 after cracking down on password sharing in February, according to market research group Kantar.
However, Netflix told investors that after a wave of cancellations, subscribers began adding "extra member" accounts. In Canada, the number of paying subscribers is now higher than before, the company said.
Netflix began testing features in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru that would let accounts pay extra to share access with up to two people outside their household in 2022. About one-third of Netflix subscribers live in the U.S. and Canada.
Whether it's your adult child, your ex-partner or a friend who benefited from your generosity, you may have allowed someone outside your home to continue using your Netflix account at some point. However, since Netflix has confirmed that it will begin charging accounts that share passwords early next year, now might be a good time to make a change.
If that person has their profile on your account, you can transfer it to their new account and delete it from yours. However, if they don't have a profile or simply use your login information to keep watching Netflix without paying, you can kick them off using a new feature in your account settings.
This week, Netflix announced it had launched a new feature in Account Settings called Managing Access and Devices. The purpose of this tool, the company says, is to log yourself out of devices you may have used while traveling, staying in hotels or visiting family and friends. However, it can also be used to boot an unauthorized user from your Netflix account.
To access this feature, sign in to Netflix in a browser on a computer, phone or tablet and select your profile. Then, hover over the downward-facing arrow icon in the upper-right corner and choose Account. Finally, go to the Security & Privacy section on your Account page and choose Manage access and devices. It may have a blue New box on the left side of the text.
You can see all active logins on your Netflix account on this page. Each will display the user, device, date and time and a relative location. Choose Sign Out on any login you want to kick off, and Netflix will remove its access.
Signing out of a session will stop that device from accessing your Netflix account. However, if the person using it knows your login information, they can sign right back in. In this case, you'll still need to change your password.
To reset your password by email or text, go to netflix.com/loginhelp in a browser window. Choose the option you want to use and follow the steps to reset your password. You may need to log back in on the device you used to change the password.
