In 1985, Sergei Gregoriev, a Soviet colonel, wants to force his nation to reform, so he leaks secret information to the West. He picks an unlikely contact, a Pierre Froment, French nebbish in the diplomatic corps. Gregoriev keeps a lot of balls in the air - a marriage, a teen son he's trying to bond with, a mistress who's a colleague at work; his tradecraft is equally reckless. Meanwhile, Froment keeps his spy work secret from his German wife, and Mitterrand uses Gregoriev's information to make France indispensable to Reagan and his government. When Gregoriev leaks a list of key Soviet moles and spies, Gorbachev is left without secret intelligence. Will Gregoriev get what he wants? Written by <jha...@hotmail.com>
"The Verdict" has to be called one of the finest courtroom-law dramas of all time, certainly a movie which deserves more recognition than it actually received over the course of the years since its publication. While the plot itself remains rather grounded and straight-forward without any particularly groundbreaking elements, Paul Newman's masterful performance as well as the great supporting actors and actresses are what helps this drama in succeeding at depicting what it aims to depict.
Newman plays an attorney who needs to pull himself together from his drinking problem in order to win a lawsuit surrounding the case of a woman suffering severe brain damage at a hospital. It should come as no surprise that Newman completely immerses himself in the role in a way only Paul Newman can be expected to. The dialogues are another main part of the movie's most intriguing aspects, flowing so well together that it's almost impossible to lose attention of what's happening. At its heart, the movie is not just a courtroom drama, it's about humans dealing with their personal conditions and problems, and it's a movie which knows how to form a bond with viewers and keep them connected to the characters.
Sadly, the movie has not reached a status as a classic of the 1980's. Perhaps it simply was not memorable enough to most viewers, or perhaps it is too fine a movie in a decade remembered mostly for action movies, horror flicks or comedies. However, if you love watching a great performance in a great movie, then "The Verdict" cannot be recommended highly enough.
Jana Aranya (The Middleman)
Jana Aranya is a 1976 Bengali film directed by Satyajit Ray, based on the novel of the same name by Mani Shankar Mukherjee. It is the last among Ray's Calcutta trilogy series, the previous two being, Pratidwandi (The Adversary, 1970) and Seemabaddha (Company Limited, 1971).
Yesterday I saw the film “ The Persuit of Hapiness” . I am sure most of you have seen this as well.
This film is trying to tell us that anyone can be successful with hard work & perseverence. Chris Gardner is able to get the job as a stock broker after working on a probation for 6 months without a salary by fighting with 20 candidates. The question is what is the fate of other 19 people? (I have seen this whilst working for ExxonMobil where the employees have to fight with each other in the ranking process. With that process, however good you are or however hard working person you are some one has to be in the bottom & eventually may be sacked! It was a dog fight).
In the film, you could see thousands of homeless people queuing up for a few places available in emergency accommodation. If one is lucky to get a place out of few available places & lucky to sleep in cramped room, he or she doesn’t know where to sleep next day. One of the main reasons for the high number of people contracting Covid-19 & dyeing in USA is the homelessness.
Coming back to the topic, New York times is writing about water crisis in Cuba but they (& people like Rohan Samarajeeva & others who are referring to this article) can’t see what is happening in their backyards.
The long economic sanctions from West are a reason for the lack of technical development in Cuba.
However they have done quite well in some areas inspite of embargo. See the article below.

Fiddler on the Roof is a1971 movie (a musical) based on the lives of people in a little Jewish village in Ukraine in early 1900.
Reb Tavye, a milkman in the village is the main character of the movie. It depicts their lives challenged due to turmoil in the era by Tsar regime & 1905 revolution. The way their ultra conservative Jewish traditional views were challenged by the young generation was beautifully portrayed in the musical.
A couple of clips from the movie are linked below.
Hope you will be able to download the full movie!

Fiddler on the Roof
Is this a musical .... ?
I had this film [downloaded ] sometimes back. But I Didn't watch.
probably I would've watched 5/10 minutes ...and was not interested
The above is Hera’s comment on the movie, “Fiddler on the roof”
Interest of a person on a movie could vary. Some people like action movies with sex scenes or movies with historical stories etc.
Yes, this movie is a musical with very good music/ songs (eg. if I were a rich man, Traditions) . The story is about the challenges faced by Jewish family/ villagers under Czar regime in early 1900 in Ukraine. The conflict between the young & older generation, the way the older generation was trying to keep their Jewish traditions, the young generation trying to move away from traditions, exploitation of poor villagers, impact of the revolutionaries & finally disintegration of the families to various countries as refugees have been portrayed brilliantly.
Whilst asking Hera to have a look again, my request to others is not to get influenced by Hera’s comment but try it yourself, if you can get hold of it. (PS: The sale pitch here is intended!)

I asked others to give the feed back on the short film “Annivarsay”, which I posted a few days ago. Since I didn’t hear from any one, I thought of starting the ball rolling.
I didn’t know there are so many short films being made, (but most of those are not cinema worthy!). However I enjoyed & liked this film.
Following are my thoughts on this film, I wrote in Sinhala using Helakuru (for the first time)
Thought of sharing the theme song of the film “To Sir with love”.
Sidney Poitier was the main actor of this movie. He passed away a few days ago & that reminded me of this movie which is one of his best.
He went to history as the first black actor to receive the academy award. His family is from Bahamas but he grew up in USA. He learnt theatre art in a Nigro theatre in USA (due to obvious reasons).
Talking of this film, a black teacher was appointed in a school in East London to teach high school children who are coming from working class families. At the beginning, he had a quite tough time with rough students who were not interested in learning. Finally, he could win the hearts of the students to become their best friend. This clip is the song sung by one of his students when he was leaving the school.
