Mother-in-laws tongue is slender, tall, and is considered an evergreen,
succulent perennial. It gets its name from fleshy leaves that are
sharp-edged and pointed like daggers growing from a basal rosette.

.

The mother-in-laws tongue, known scientifically as Sansevieria
trifasciata, can grow to three feet tall. There are more than a dozen
species that are known by the same name. Its a native of tropical Africa
(Nigeria). In the wild, the plant grows in dense stands. It lives very
well in zones 9-12 and has spread all over the world, obviously from
people giving gifts.

.

When rooted, it can become quite invasive and is treated as a weed in many
areas. The thick stands crowd out any other vegetation. There isnt a
really good way to get rid of it, once its established other than to dig
it out by the roots. In our area (zones 3 and 4) that really should never
be a problem outside.

.

Other names for this spiky sword include good luck plant, birds nest
plant, African bowstring hemp, and snake plant.

.

Mother-in-laws tongue was introduced to Europe in the early 1700s by
travelers from north Africa, where it was given its less than polite name.
It came to the United States with the Spanish in that same century. Before
then it was known as snake plant because some varieties have a verdant
green color base with bright, longitudinal, yellow stripes, like a garter
snake. Honestly, because of its use as a house plant, as many as three
dozen cultivars and as many nicknames have cropped up, (pun intended).

.

My sources refer to the plant as mildly poisonous to cats, dogs, and small
children who might taste it. Mother-in-laws tongue contains steroidal
saponins which help create steroids for muscle growth and raise
testosterone levels. Ingestion of the plant can cause gastrointestinal
problems. Exposure of bare skin to the juice of the plant can be
irritating if your body is prone to allergy. So, keep your houseplant in a
safe location.

.

On the other hand, recent modern research of Sansevieria trifasciata has
shown that saponins arent the only thing to take note of.

.

The plant has shown antibacterial, analgesic, and antipyretic qualities.
This means that it kills germs, is a pain killer, and fever reducer. In
Malaysia its been used as a medicine for hundreds of years for just such
problems. Many herbalists keep pots of mother-in-laws tongue for the
leaves and rhizomes for topical preparations. An infusion in oil has long
been used for earaches. In checking over two dozen of my herbal resources,
none of them included mother-in-laws tongue.
