Camelina, and oil crops in general, could fare better now in Washington
because some infrastructure has been built here recently, she said. In
fact, one of the new crushers operates at nearby Natural Selection Farms
of Sunnyside.
"Last year they pressed camelina, too," Hang said. "The meal from the
pressing I think is good fertilizer. I think organic growers will want it,
and it can make good fertilizer for indoor plants. Or camelina meal can
get mixed in with chicken feed."
The FDA recently approved camelina meal for use in chicken feed, albeit
only for broilers, but that doesn't stop camelina biofuel promotion, much
of which is generated by Great Plains Oil & Exploration, also known as The
Camelina Co. According to Great Plains' chief development officer, Sam
Huttenbauer Jr. in Cincinnati, the company is half-owned by INEOS of Great
Britain, a $45 billion corporation. It has ties to Agragen of Helsinki,
Finland, where industrial lines of camelina are being developed by
molecular breeding.

In the big picture, there is growing controversy over biofuel crops
competing with food crop acres, and Hang is mindful of water use for
biofuel as well.
"Yes, the water is an issue, but the mandate of the state is to make
biofuels. If we don't want to depend as much on petroleum as we do now, we
have to make some adjustments.
