I love my vegetable garden but I'm lazy. What's the simplest method of
fertilising it?
When producing crops, the more you put in the more you'll get out.
Ideally, before each seasonal planting, add blood and bone, compost and
manures, then mulch with pea straw or lucerne. You'll be constantly
building up your soil, increasing not just its fertility but its
water-holding capacity and healthy populations of soil organisms. In
winter, grow a green manure crop. For fast-turnover crops such as leafy
greens, fortnightly applications of soluble fertiliser will ensure rapid
growth.
