The arrowhead plant goes by numerous names including arrowhead vine,
American evergreen, five fingers, and nephthitis. Although it may be grown
outdoors in some regions, the arrowhead plant (Syngonium podophyllum) is
typically grown as a houseplant.

There are many species of Sagittaria but all are perennial plants that
have arrowhead-shaped leaves. Usually leaves have 3 points giving it the
arrowhead shape but some are narrow and almost grass-like. Arrowheads can
grow in shallow water or in wet areas. Leaves grow in clusters from the
base and can be from less than a foot tall to over 4 feet. Leaf petioles
are long, often spongy and have a milky-like fluid if crushed. Rhizomes
can be extensive and some species have large tubers off the roots.

Nephthytis, the Arrowhead plant, is a popular houseplant for those who
have shadier spaces or maybe lack special talent in the care of plants. I
love this plant: it is so easy to grow and always looks great! I have a
beautiful variety that has pale pink and green leaves, but it is more
often seen in green or green and white, and occasionally can be found with
silver markings, or even red.
This plant is a vine, but it is most often seen it its juvenile form. The
juvenile form is what gives this plant the common name Arrowhead Plant,
because that is when you will see it having arrowhead shaped leaves. When
the plant is immature, the leaves grow in a kind of rosette form,
clustered loosely together. The mature Nephthytis is a vine with palmate,
compound leaves.

Ethnobotanic: Sagittaria is an aquatic plant with tuberous roots that can
be eaten like potatoes. Lewis and Clark found it at the mouth of the
Willamette and considered it equal to the potato, and valuable for trade.
Indian women collected it in shallow water from a canoe, or waded into
ponds or marshes in the late summer and loosened the roots with their
toes. The roots would rise to the top of the water where they were
gathered and tossed into floating baskets. Today, the tubers are harvested
with a hoe, pitchfork, or rake. Tubers are baked in fire embers, boiled,
or roasted in the ashes. Tubers are skinned and eaten whole or mashed.
