Subject: Fwd: Opportunity to Comment - Environment for Development Perspectives: Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small Scale Gold mining

Hello everyone,
I would like to share this email to receive your inputs and comments on the draft report on Environment for Development Perspectives: Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining. The draft version of the report can be found on the UNEP website:
This paper is one of the interesting paper on ASGM developed by UNEP with contributions from several people including IPEN.
It is important to put more inputs and comments to produce a proportional, balanced and objective view on ASGM and mercury use in the sector. We would like to see more critical view on how ASGM practices should be or would be seen in the global context of sustainable development.
In particular, I need your inputs on:
- the long term strategy
- social, culture and health aspect
- how to deal with the contaminated sites
- other issues and externalities which have not included yet but you think worth to be addressed
I will be appreciate and glad to compile all of your comments by September 5, 2011 so I will have time to organize all comments and submit it to UNEP by September 12, 2011.
Thank you for your attention. Looking forward to have you comments soon.
Best,
Yuyun

Dear ASGM partnership area contacts,
UNEP is currently drafting a paper "Environment for Development Perspectives: Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small Scale Gold mining".
The report provides a synthesis of existing knowledge to frame the economic argument for investing in mercury reduction/elimination in artisanal and small-scale gold mining as part of development strategies for this sector. The objective is to provide an analytical foundation, including often omitted negative external consequences. The aim is to identify the economic challenges and opportunities for reducing or eliminating mercury in artisanal and small-scale practices. This approach ultimately seeks to motivate greater political, private sector and civil society support for significant reduction or elimination of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold production.
A draft version of the report can be found on our website:

We welcome your comments on the draft report by Monday, 12th September 2011 to louise.g...@unep.org. We expect a final report to be ready before the end of the year.
