Subject: Sea Levels from Melting Ice

Hi All

The Amount of Melting Ice Required to Raise the Sea Level by 100mm

          Surface Area of the Earth  =        4

                                                    =        4π(6370)²

                                                    =        510m sq km

          Seas take up approx. 3/5 of the earth’s surface

          Area of Seas           As      =        3x510e6/5

                                                    =        300m sq km

          Area of Arctic          Aar     =        14.1m sq km

          Area of Antarctic     Aan    =        14.2m sq km

          Vol. of water require to raise sea level by 0,1m:

                                        V        =        0.1e-3x300e6

                                                  =        30e3 cu km

If the arctic ice is floating it will have no effect on the sea level.

          Thickness of ice required in Antarctica:

                                        Tice    =        30e3/14e6

                                        Tice    =        2.1e-3 km

          A 2 m thick slab of ice would have to melt in Antarctica in order to raise the sea level by 100mm

So I don’t think those who own coastal property are in any immediate danger of losing their investments.  (So maybe they are)

Regards

So, Sid, assuming that your revised calculations are now correct – and with the understanding that the Antarctic Ice Shelf is at places more than 2km thick – would that indicate that the melting thereof would present a very significant risk of coastal property damage / loss ?

I believe Greenland too contains significant volumes of land ice – so it’s not just Antarctica

Thanks

Mark

Hello Mark

Yes, to be more accurate the Greenland area should be included.

Google gives me an area of 2,2m sq km, which should be added to the 14,2 sq km of the Antarctic.

The answer then comes out as 1,83m of melting ice to raise the sea level by 100mm.
