Information about Unicode enabled Mobile phones in specs.

Unicode's contribution for Internationalisation/localisations is great and countless.

 

Now a days Mobile Phones are developing as Mini Computers and hundreds of applications are bundled in them.

 

Many models of Mobile phones are Unicode/UTF8 compatible and provides lot of utilities like SMS, Email, Web browsing, chating, social networking like facebook, bilingual/multilingual dictionaries, transliteration/translation tools etc. in Mobile Phones in Most of the Unicoded scripts/languages of world.

 

Many mobiles provides above facilities in Indic Scripts - Devanagari, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati .....etc. also. However No mobiles yet found in any market with facility in Oriya Script.

 

But, about availability of Unicode enabled Scripts/languages, no any informations is found in the specifications of the mobile phone models made available at the websites of the manufacturers.

 

For Example :

No any information is found that

whether this set is Unicode/UTF8 compatible or not?

Which languages are available in this handset?

 

Likewise in the specifications described at websites of other Mobile phone Manufactures and reviews posted at different websites/ forums generaly does not include any information about the facilties Unicoded Scripts supported.

 

So the User/customer/reseller/dealer is confused and can't find correct handset with required language/script facilities.

 

So it is requested to all the Unicode authorities, Unicode List members to

take necessary action by putting up in different forums about

the need of making it mandatory/necessary to include informations

about the Unicode/UTF8 compatibility

and facilities of IMEs/utilities available for languages/scripts in the

specifications of the mobile handsets

published at websites/brochures etc.

 

Please forward this to concerned telecom authorities, manufacturers, forums

in International Interest.

हे मित्रों मोबाइल फोन में हिन्दी समर्थन बारे बहुत बार पहले बात हो चुकी है। जब भी फोन लेने की बारी आती है और हमें कोई सैट हार्दिक रुप से पसन्द आता है तो हम सबका खून जलता है क्योंकि हम पाते हैं कि उसमें हिन्दी का समर्थन नहीं है। अच्छे उच्च श्रेणी के स्मार्टफोनों में हिन्दी इनपुट तो छोड़िये हिन्दी प्रदर्शन तक सही नहीं होता। मजबूरी में ऐसा फोन लेने के बावजूद भी बन्दा हमेशा हिन्दी के लिये तरसता ही रहता है।

कई बार बात हुयी है कि फोन में चाइनीज, रशियन आदि भले होती है हिन्दी क्यों नहीं होती। कारण सीधा है कि भारतीय चीनियों, रुसियों आदि की तरह अपने फोन में हिन्दी प्रयोग नहीं करते (भले ही उसमें हिन्दी हो भी)। कम्पनी को अपना उत्पाद बाजार के हिसाब से बनाना है, वह अपना उत्पाद कुछ सौ/हजार हिन्दी प्रयोक्ताओं के लिये नहीं बल्कि करोड़ों ग्राहकों को ध्यान में रखकर बनाती है। फिर बात चीन आदि की तरह सीधी नहीं है जहाँ पूरे राष्ट्र में भाषायें भले ही भिन्न हों लेकिन लिपि एक है, भारत के मामले में लिपियाँ भी कई हैं, एक लिपि होती तो कम्पनी भी शायद उसके लिये समर्थन बनाती। अब इस बारे कई बार सुझाव दिये गये कि भारत में बिकने वाले फोनों में सरकार को भारतीय भाषाओं का समर्थन अनिवार्य करना चाहिये। यदि ऐसा हो सकता तो बहुत अच्छा होता पर निकट भविष्य में ऐसा होने वाला नहीं। वैसे भी सरकार कोई ऐसा काम तब तक नहीं करती जब तक इससे उसका खुद कोई नुकसान न हो रहा हो।

दूसरी बात ये कि यदि मोबाइल कम्पनियाँ हर फोन में हिन्दी/इण्डिक समर्थन देना नहीं चाहती या कई भारतीय भाषाओं को फोन में उपलब्ध करवाना उन्हें कठिन लगता है तो उन्हें ये करना चाहिये कि अपनी साइट पर एक भाषा पैक/पैच (आयरॉन्स हिन्दी सपोर्ट की तर्ज पर) उपलब्ध करवाये जिसे फोन में इंस्टाल करने पर फोन में उस भाषा का प्रदर्शन एवं इनपुट जुड़ जाय। यदि कम्पनी खुद कीबोर्ड बनाने की जहमत नहीं उठाना चाहती तो माइक्रोसॉफ्ट कीबोर्ड लेआउट क्रियेटर की तर्ज पर एक टूल वर्चुअल कीबोर्ड बनाने हेतु उपलब्ध करवाना चाहिये जिससे बन्दा अपनी पसन्द का कीबोर्ड खुद बना सके। लेकिन बात वहीं आती है कम्पनियों को ऐसा करने की जरुरत हो तब वे करें न।

इसके अलावा हर कम्पनी को अपनी भारतीय साइट पर सभी फोन मॉडलों के साथ उल्लेख करना चाहिये कि उसमें किस-किस भाषा का प्रदर्शन एवं इनपुट समर्थन है ताकि कम से कम बन्दा वर्तमान मॉडलों में से तो अपनी वाँछित भाषा का मॉडल चुन सके।

.......भारत में बिकने वाले फोनों में सरकार को भारतीय भाषाओं का समर्थन अनिवार्य करना चाहिये। यदि ऐसा हो सकता तो बहुत अच्छा होता पर निकट भविष्य में ऐसा होने वाला नहीं। वैसे भी सरकार कोई ऐसा काम तब तक नहीं करती जब तक इससे उसका खुद कोई नुकसान न हो रहा हो।

राष्ट्रपति के अध्यादेश हैं कि केन्द्रीय सरकारी कार्यालयों/उपक्रमों आदि में खरीदे जानेवाले सभी उपकरण द्विभाषी(हिन्दी-अंग्रेजी) सुविधा वाले होने चाहिए। फिर भी इसका उल्लंघन सर्वाधिक हो रहा है।

 

भारत सरकार के ildc.in द्वारा सभी भारतीय भाषाओं/लिपियों के सॉफ्टवेयर सुविधाएँ निःशिल्क दिए जा रहे हैं। फिर भी अधिकांश लोग इनका उपयोग नहीं करते।

 

SMS तो हिन्दी तथा भारतीय लिपियों में कोई भी करना नहीं चाहेगा, क्योंकि ये UTF8 encoding में जाते हैं। जबकि अंग्रेजी में plain ASCII में। UTF8 में एक बाइट बदलकर तीन बाईट हो जाते हैं। हालांकि सभी मोबाईल सेवा प्रदाताओं के अलग अलग SMS दर हैं। लेकिन उदाहरण के लिए BSNL की oneindia scheme में जैसा कि 150 अक्षरों के एक SMS के लिए 1 रुपया लगता है। तो हिन्दी/अन्य भारतीय लिपि में किया गया 150 अक्षरों का SMS 450 अक्षरों में बदल कर तीन SMS के टुकड़ों में पहुँचेगा और 3 रुपये का चार्ज होगा।

 

अर्थात् हिन्दी/Indic SMS अंग्रेजी की तुलना में 3 गुना महंगा है।

 

लेकिन आजकल GPRS का मासिक शुल्क fix होता है। इसलिए ईमेल तथा इण्टरनेट ब्राउसिंग, या facebook आदि पर हिन्दी/indic में कार्य के लिए लोग हिन्दी/indic की सुविधा मोबाईल फोन पर चाहते हैं।

 

अतः सरकार या TRAI Indic languages को सभी मोबाईल उत्पादकों के लिए ऐसा कठोर निर्देश जारी करेगी, इसमें सन्देह है।

 

 

 

दूसरी बात ये कि यदि मोबाइल कम्पनियाँ हर फोन में हिन्दी/इण्डिक समर्थन देना नहीं चाहती या कई भारतीय भाषाओं को फोन में उपलब्ध करवाना उन्हें कठिन लगता है तो उन्हें ये करना चाहिये कि अपनी साइट पर एक भाषा पैक/पैच (आयरॉन्स हिन्दी सपोर्ट की तर्ज पर) उपलब्ध करवाये जिसे फोन में इंस्टाल करने पर फोन में उस भाषा का प्रदर्शन एवं इनपुट जुड़ जाय।

हालांकि कुछ कंपनियाँ ऐसा करती हैं। लेकिन अधिकांश मोबाईल के फर्मवेयर ओपेन सोर्स नहीं हैं। कुछेक ही Linux OS आधारित मोबाईल हैं, किन्तु इनमें जोड़-तोड़ तकनीकी-विशेषज्ञ ही कर पाएँगे।

 

...हर कम्पनी को अपनी साइट पर सभी फोन मॉडलों के साथ उल्लेख करना चाहिये कि उसमें किस-किस भाषा का प्रदर्शन एवं इनपुट समर्थन है ताकि कम से कम बन्दा वर्तमान मॉडलों में से तो अपनी वाँछित भाषा का मॉडल चुन सके।

हाँ, यह सूचना देना अनिवार्य किया जाना चाहिए कि बेवसाइट पर उपबल्ध Specs. में Unicode/UTF8 compatibility तथा Available Language Script IME/tools संबंधी विवरण अवश्य प्रकाशित किए जाएँ।

Yes, it is vary important to provide Indic facilities compulsorily in India. As 92% of Indian public not efficient in English.

 

But, the 'Simple' solution may not be possible. TRAI will do so? Doubt. Who will bell the cat?

 

Further -

If all world languages support is made available on all mobile handsets,

even if the Govts provides free of cost all the tools/fonts/IMEs/USPs,

the handset will require more memory and ROM space, which will increase the cost. Because people use mobile handsets according to their affordability.

 

Unicode CLDR and some tools are (I think) available free of cost.

Many Mobile handsets has hundreds of languages IME etc facilities.

 

Further,  now a days everything depends upon the consumers demand. If crores of people demand Indic, Mobile manufacturers will provide automatically for there market capture and business profit. No any interfere by any Govt. authority will be needed. However Govt. need to control them with some defined standards.

 

GOI authorities are taking some steps :

But they should take strong actions and promptly. Standards must be released within a time frame few months, "not years". As technology is developing with lightning speed.

 

Here, the issue is only that :

 

The informations available on the websites of Mobile manufacturers/resellers  One subject-heading must be added about :

 

-- Unicode/UTF8 compatibility and

-- Available Languages/Scripts IMEs/Fonts/USPs/Dictionaries/tools etc. facilities.

 

so that consumers can choice as per their needs.

 

 

It will be better :

if It can be made mandatory for the mobile phone manufacturers to provide Additional Language patches softwares of IMEs/fonts/SPs/tools  to download and install in the handsets, people can use them as per their need and install in the Memory Cards, SD Cards/Micro SD cards additionally installed in their handsets. So that, the original firmware of Mobile handsets will not be disturbed.

 

It will be more better if some standards released early for this purpose for world wide compatibility.

Still the Phones of lower MRP are made with the fact in mind that users will be Indians and also those Indians who are not much efficient in English, so hindi is provided on the level of basic operation, these basic operation includes Phonebook management and messaging. But here the problem is in network operation level also, while transmitting text in local language from one brand mobile to another brand mobile makes text unreadable and only junk transmits, I've also observed that sometime transmitting Text in Hindi from LG mobile (GSm) to LG (CDMA) also transmits junk only .

Anyways, Our concern is not much on using hindi in operating mobile but to have proper hindi rendering in internet browsing through mobile. Symbian based Nokia mobile have facility to install additional fonts, and to route between system installed fonts and new fonts through Font router applications , one of those Font router application has been tried and tested by me on multiple mobiles , N73 and Nokia3250, this application requires  Signing for individual IMEIs

I think these companies will do the needful only if market make them realize the need of hindi mobiling, and people stop buying the mobiles which do not support hindi.

As I suggested earlier, if it is not possible for handset manufacturers to include all Indian languages support in the handset, they should provide Language pach/patch (on the lines of Eyron's Hindi Support) on their website for all languages which should install the display and input support of that language. Moreover for touchscreen phones inScript layout based downloadable keyboards should be provided.

Also, touchscreen phones have become a standard for smartphones these days.  So companies should provide a tool (on the lines of Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator) to create virtual keyboard, so that anyone can create keyboard layout of his choice.

Oriya Unicode is first time released in Windows 7 and works fine. Therefore, iPhone works in compatibility.

 

So, in earlier version of Windows i.e. win.xp Oriya is not possible.

 

In Next release of Mac OS Oriya may be included.
