Gossypium hirsutum Linn., Sp. Pl. ed. 2. 975. 1753.

Common names: American cotton, Bourbon cotton, Upland cotton

Erect annual herb with 3-7 cm long leaves usually 3-lobed, rarely 5-lobed, upper sometimes entire and ovate; stipules ovate or lanceolate; epicalyx segments large, broadly ovate, 2-4 cm long, laciniate with linear to lanceolate teeth; calyx cupular, 6-7 mm long; corolla pale yellow, 5-6 cm across; capsule 3-4 cm long, ovoid, beaked.
