Greetings from oikos !
Rivers... originate in mountains, travel through plains to meet the ocean & complete the hydrological cycle. River changes its forms in every landscape; from a tiny freshet on slopes to roaring crystal clear stream in hills collecting nutrients from soil & vegetation, then transforming into silent river course that gives away nutrients in the form of sediments finally merging into sea to provide food to innumerable marine creatures. Flow & flood are two main characters of any river without which it may die.
Along with watercourse, its banks & bank vegetation play a vital role in river ecosystem. It is critical to protect rivers with all these components in most natural & functional state for better water management.
River will function & serve better only when it flows. So, let the river flow with all its natural forms. Let’s not destroy what we can not create !
A large sized deciduous tree, also known as, Indian willow, literally marks the water level of rivers along the banks. These are tall growing trees typically found in all major river systems in medium rainfall zone, ie in Dhule, Kolhapur, Pune, Satara districts. It can be identified with the whitish green underside of the leaf. Delicate flowers appear during early monsoon months & it shades leaves during monsoon months.
Thick hedges of Walunj can be seen along the rivers along Pune – Satara Highway.
